T20 And Windows XP pro

#1 Post by zipitup » Wed Feb 22, 2006 9:00 pm

Hi,
I have a T20 for my son ready for College later this year, but i can not get windows XP Pro to Install.
I have tried a clean install twice and also tried to upgrade a clean 98SE install with no success.
The XP install gets so far (about 35%) and just locks up. I know the XP disk is ok as i have installed it on another Std PC machine to check it.
The IBM site is a bit confusing, it seems the best bet is to run the auto updater software - but to do this i need to install xp first!!!
Can anybody please help - i always considered my self quite knowledgable, but this has me beat......
many thanks
Mark

What does "locks up" mean? Does is crash or is the installation indicator (don't know how to describe it) still moving?

Have you updated the BIOS to be able to accept WinXP? The early versions will not accept WinXP.

did you upgrade the EC with the BIOS? are you sure its the most recent? This is a common problem with the T20, but the most recent bios should remedy the issue...

kinda a slow machine for XP and college use though...

I went through this with my 600x...Turns out I had a PC133 RAM stick installed in the machine..

So in your case I would remove 1 stick then try an install, then the other,etc...I'm not saying you have the wrong RAM installed, maybe 1 is bad/going bad...

Hi all,
many thanks for all your assistance, changing the memory made no difference (both mine were pc100) but this sort of pointed me in the right direction.....

I REMOVED THE XIRCOM MINI PCI CARD INSIDE THE LAPTOP
MODEL NUMBER XIRCOM MPCI3856GSP-100PA (MPCI3856GSP-100)
AND WIDOWS XP INSTALLED STRAIGHT AWAY....... :D :D :D

Xircom have been taken over by intel now - so now i need to find suitable drivers to use the mini pci lan/modem - but at least xp has now installed!!!

thx for the replies

Mark

You might be able to reinstall the card now that WinXp had been loaded.
