Thinkpad T20 - put together - doesn't start up - strange

#1 Post by cyberfilmmaker » Fri Mar 17, 2006 7:00 pm

Hi,

I have replace the case/shell of my Thinkpad T20.

This meant to take all parts out and put them together at
a later stage (incl motherboard/ cpu fan ect).

I did it a couple of times and it does all fit and look good.

The trouble is that my system won't start up.

After pressing the power button the system will 3 PEEP 3 times (short peeps) and shuts down after wards.

Does anybody know what these peeps mean?
Is there any part that might have died during this operation (eg cpu fan / sub card)?

Many thanks.
CF

Thinkpad t20 error peep codes found - bizarre symptom still

#2 Post by cyberfilmmaker » Fri Mar 17, 2006 7:13 pm

Hi ,
I just found the error PEEP codes :

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4K7KB7

Three short beeps 3 times is either DIMM or MOTHERBOARD

I replaced the memory DIMM. Now the peeps are gone.

BIZARRE SYPTOMS:
1]
When using the power supply, battery light is on (indicating fully charged battery),I press power button, hard disk light
goes on for a sec , but than they entire system shuts down including battery light. Pressing power nothing happens.

2]
When using battery power, pressing the power button the hard disk light goes on and off again. I can press the power button to get the same result.

I managed once to get the WINDOWS start up screen (on BATTERY/ F1 key)...after a couple of seconds it shut down again.

Can anybody still shed some light onto this. Is this a symptom that some specific part is broken (eg cpu fan)?

many thanks,
CF

I would check to make sure that you connected the power cable for the fan, or atleast make sure that it is properly seated. Maybe reseat the processor.

problem solved - different hard disk bays T23 T20

#4 Post by cyberfilmmaker » Fri Mar 17, 2006 8:21 pm

Hi tfflivemb2,

many thanks for your reply.

The solution was as bizarre as the symptom!

It seems my new case/shell is from a T23 and there are different disk trays (T20 vs T23 / IBM MANUAL DOCUMENT 62p9631 PAGE:116).

I needed to use my old T20
Hard disk bay otherwise the hard disk malfunctions and the system would shut down. It think it is the way the isolation at the bottom of these trays are designed.

Well it works now all fine.

Back from the twilight zone

:)

All the best
CF
