They are socketed. I am not sure of the socket number.

Actually, I don't believe that is correct. The 600X uses a MMC-2 processor, just like the 600E.

reason I asked is that the similar age toshiba porteges have a soldered cpu which makes then wholy unacceptable for 2nd hand use like we do.

if the cpu or m/b goes bad the board is like $2,000 to replace

rubbish laptops in my opinion and not a patch on thinkpads

Actually, I don't believe that is correct. The 600X uses a MMC-2 processor, just like the 600E.

I tried to upgrade a 600X after I upgraded a T20 to a 900Mhz, I had a spare processor and I thought the same... T20=600X but found out after I pull it apart that the processor was soldered.

Are you sure that it was a 600X that you were working on, and not a 240X, or something like that? I just double checked the Hardware Maintenance Manual (page 52) and it says that it takes a CPU card.

I'm still not even clear how you can relate the T20 to the 600X though. I just double checked the T20 Hardware Maintenance Manual (page 98), and it too states that the processor is socketed.

I believe that chan_man was referring to the fact that the CPU in the 600X is soldered to the MMC2 module.
