T23 problem - Fan turns off after start up?

Hi,

I bought a used T23 (1.13) with a fan problem. It turns off about 20-40 seconds after start up whether I am in the bios or booting off the hard drive. I tested the memory, hard drive and there ok.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Does it ever come on again?

The fan isn't meant to run continuously. Infact, the fan on my T21 that I am typing on right now isn't running.

I would say you need to obtain the following information for further diagnosis:

1) Install MobileMeter and begin monitoring the CPU temperature. You can download a copy from here:

Ignore the Japanese character set and simply click the second link on the page (mm0310.zip). Unzip the program and start it up. Right-click on the MobileMeter window, select Options, ACPI temperature tab and verify that the thermal zone is set to #0: THM0, which should be the CPU. Verify that the Display temperature optoin is checked and the Graph option unchecked. Close the Options window. The Temperature line should now indicate the CPU temp. Use the system for a little while running your normal programs. Let us know what the maximum temperature is. IF it should go above 70 degrees and the fan isn't spinning, shut the system down.

2) Download a copy of PC Doctor for the T2x series. You can get a version designed to be written onto three diskettes from IBM's site here:

or if you have access to CD burning software that is capable of burning an .ISO image file, you can use this link:

Once you have a copy of PC Doctor, shutdown the system and boot from the floppies or CD. You may have to alter your BIOS boot order setup, or you can press the F12 key when powering up. Both methods require that you do the "press any key" operation to continue (swapping floppies or loading the next disk image from the CD). When PC Doctor has completed loading, click on the Diagnostic menu, then the Other Devices option. That should open a secondary screen showing several test options. Click in the right-side column (next to the ">>" symbol) for the IBM Thermal Sensors. That should run the sensor test. Note whether it passes or fails. Do the same for the IBM Fan test. When the tests are finished, press the Escape key to exit the Miscellaneous Test menu and then click the Quit/Exit menus. You can then remove the floppy or CD and power off/re-boot the laptop.

If both of those tests pass and your CPU temperatures are below 60 degress, then I would say everything is running okay for the moment. The fan should be turning somewhere above 60 degress (at least on my systems they do) and I don't know of any other test software besides PC Doctor that checks the status of the fan and sensors on the motherboard.

Thanks for the reply and links. Unfortunetaly I took it apart last night so I will have to get some thermal grease and put it back together to run the tests.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the machine will reboot on its own. After reading your post it must be over heating and restating.
