Best DVD burner for my T22

NEC 6650 ($53) or IBM Ultrabay ($79)

i did some research and found out that most of you guys prefer the NEC over the Ultrabay.

but the NEC requires some modding (which i'm pretty incapable of)therefore leaning towards getting the Ultrabay, plus the Ultrabay will look sleeker on the T22. Btw i don't need the dual layer

Please add ur opinion, and if u can, can u also help me find a better price

I've had both IBM Multiburner and NECs in mine and my wife's T23, T30, A30 and A31. I kept the multiburner for the simple reason that it was faster and I found the looks of the "correct" bezel were pretty irrelevent when compared side by side; especially on the A30 which has a pretty flat side anyway.

As far as the "modifications" goes, it's really simple! You put on the correct adapter and rails from a UB2K drive (a few screws) and you cut the corner of the bezel to match the contour of the drive....that's it. I've done it with a dremel, with an xacto knife and with a razor saw and it's just not that hard to do. Just go slow.

I've purchased several UJ-820 DVD burners off of eBay in the last couple of months, generally paying about $25-$35. Each was designed originally for non-IBM use, which means the Ultrabay 2000 caddy swap was needed, as well as the modification of the front bezel as schen has described above.

I favor using a Dremel with a cutting wheel, mounted in the accessory drill press stand and sliding the bezel around in order to perform the two cuts needed to make the 'notch'.

If you don't want to mess with the bezel mod and don't have an existing UB2K device from which to obtain the drive rails, then you're left with paying a (generally) higher price for an IBM drive.
