T23 Fan error

#1 Post by dickchailey » Sat Sep 29, 2007 8:40 am

Hi, I recently bought a T23 with a broken screen. After replacement it worked fine but if left for a few days I get a Fan error on startup. After a few goes it starts OK. I have removed the fan and given it a good clean but the faults the same.
Should I replace the fan or check the inductors on the underside of the board?
Thanks

If you are getting the fan error, I would try to replace the fan. Also, inspect the wires that connect to the systemboard, as well as the solder joints for the fan's pin connector.

I don't think that this is related to the inductor issue that is popular.

If your fan is giving you trouble, I have one I could sell you. Email me at dcotfas@ualberta.ca if you're interested.

Thanks for the replies. I think the postage to the UK would make it uneconomic - there are plenty on ebay under 10UKP, thanks for the offer.
Must be having a bad day. As I was looking at the replies my main PC died - just completely dead. Hooked up a spare Power supply and it works, but its only a 200w box so its a trip to PC World tomorrow for a new 400w unit.
Back to a little X30 - nice machine.

Replacement fan came this morning. When I removed the old fan I found the large 3 terminal inductor under the fan - just north of the CPU - was loose, slight push and it came off. Fixed and now working fine. I have replaced the coils on the underside of the board but never checked this one before. Do you think this inductor was causing the fan problems?

I get a "fan error" on start up with my T23 as well. Anyone know of a good source for replacement fans? (and some "howto" guides?) :)

If you're still in that big sandbox then most likely you'll have a hard time getting parts out there. Otherwise, eBay or here in the Marketplace are good fishing grounds.

It's possible that the "fan error" may be due to a failing CMOS battery. At least that's what I've seen on the 600-series; don't think I've seen it yet on the T2s but then again, I generally replace them (the battery) before they go dead. Also, you can download a copy of PC Doctor for DOS and run the fan diagnostic:

As far as the "how-to" goes, the Hardware Maintenance Manual should be all you need to extract the fan. On a T23, you need to remove the keyboard, hinge cover and keyboard bezel. The fan is held in place by three screws and the power plug. Clean off the old thermal grease, apply some new stuff and pop the replacement fan on. Re-attach everything and give it the smoke test.

Bought a replacement heat sink / fan, did the swap, and now my T23 is as good as new.

Thanks for the advice.

funny, mine has just done this

however it's probably cheaper for my to buy complete junker T23s off ebay and rip 'em up rather than buy the parts new

If you have the same symptoms, I highly suggest ordering a replacement CPU fan/heatsink off of Ebay. They are quite plentiful AND cheap. (and was all that I required to get me back up and functional)
