It can take the largest IDE/EIDE/ATA/PATA drive in 2.5" format that you can find/afford.
Just do NOT try any SATA disks.

It may be a very old drive and should work, unless it is defective.
But if you want the best HDD for such a machine, look for the 160GB Samsung HM160HC.

Bumping this old thread. I tried an msata in a pata enclosure today (256GB) and while the bios could identify the SSD, W98 could not reliably format the disk ( ). Maybe the practical limitation is 128GB? Either that or there is something fishy with a T21 + msata ssd/pata in combination.

Maybe you can try a modified windows 98 installation.
Or you can do the partitions in windows 10 (Always in FAT32 obviously) and install directly to the partitions you created. Maybe worth the try

Regarding Windows 98's HDD size limits, this forum thread at vogons.org might be of some use: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=44423
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons
