new battery & mem upgrade gone sour

#1 Post by Kapso » Thu May 07, 2009 4:06 pm

Hi'ya all!
Did some shopping a couple of days ago for my T22 (2647-4EG). Bought two sitck of 256MB so-dimm and a new 4,4Ah battery. When I got them I was pretty upset, because neither one of them is working. This is the memory I bought and here's the battery. Can you tell me just by looking at them should they be compatible? I have 1.12 bios rev., which is the latest I found.

It needs DDR not SDR memory types.

I'm not too sure about the number of pins but my T30 has a 512 ddr 2700 sodimm 200-pin 2.5 CL type of RAM on one side. The other RAM is a stock 256 that came with the laptop.

You are aware that you can increase your RAM to 2gb right?

I'm not an expert on that but do a search with "T30 maximum RAM" and that might help you out. You'll also notice in all the search results many helpful posts regarding the type of RAM that is compatible with the T30.

Good luck :)

Edit: Major Whoops!

Wrong model!!!

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

The T22 takes PC100 "low density" SODIMMs. The one pictured in the eBay auction you referenced may not work because of these things:

- auction description does not explicitly say "low density"
- or say that it works in a T22
- or have an IBM FRU of 33L3069 or 33L3070
- and, if you can believe the picture, does not have the proper number of memory chips to make it a "low density" version (there is one exception; I'll get to that in a minute)

Here's the complete explanation: Back when the T22 system was designed, the main memory component being used were 16MB devices. You would need 16 such devices for a 256MB module (16 x 16MB = 256MB). As time went on and memory makers started to manufacture 32MB devices, one important specification changed; refreshing. However, the chipset in the laptop still used the refresh specification for 16MB devices and it can't be changed. These 16MB devices are what's normally referred to as "low density". Modules built with 32MB devices are "high density". If the modules you bought only have 8 devices on them, then most likely you have a "high density" module and it will not work in the T22 (8 x 32MB = 256MB).

There is one exception to this rule of "16 devices = low density and 8 devices = high density" and it's outlined in this thread:

Thanks for your welcome!

Jeez. What a let-down. It does have an 8 blocks (4 per side). The model number from the mem module is Samsung K4S561632E-TC1L.

Can you tell me anything about the battery?

The Samsung part number can be decoded using this datasheet:

http://www.samsung.com/global/system/bu ... M_code.pdf

If you look through the table, the "K4S" means it's SDRAM, the "56" says the density, refresh is: 256M (Megabits or 32MBytes), 8K/64ms. The 8K refresh is what determines "high density". Low density is 4K refresh.

As far as the battery is concerned, nothing that I can see, other than you did get the correct one for the T2x. If the battery is fully charged, it will be indicated by a steady green LED on the left-hand hinge and the AC adapter plugged in. If it's yellow or blinking, then it's not fully charged or charging. Can your 600X operate from the AC adapter alone?

I got a word back from the memory seller. I have two options. I can upgrade the generic mems I got to a brand name "2 x 256MB PC100 Super talent SODIMM" for extra 23$, or get a refund. Do you think it'll be same with this memory? I googled the name promptly and it returned with a picture of a comb with a four blocks per side.

*What comes to the battery, my laptop is neither able to use it's power or charge it. I does however seem to be able to recognize the battery, which is apparent when you plug it in on the fly when running on AC on XP desktop. Windows shows IBM LION battery connectected with static 17% charge, but is is not indicating it being charged. The laptop won't start with the battery if the AC is not connected. It also loses power instantly as you unplugg the AC cord on fly when the new battery is in place.

Looks like you got burned twice, ouch!
You got 6 months battery warranty, so return it either for a refund or another one (which may have the same problem...).

As to the RAM, get a refund.
Then go to http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs ... 94A5CA7304
Costs more, but guaranteed to work.
OR, check eBay for these Crucial part numbers:
T20 CT484548 \
T21 CT484656 > either one will do fine
T22 CT484771 /

All of the above are the same RAM, described as: 256MB SDRAM, PC133 • CL=2 • Non-parity • 133MHz • 3.3V • 32Meg x 64
The above is the one exception where PC133 will work in a PC100 slot!
Advantage: if you upgrade to a T23, the RAM will work there also!

I bought a chinese battery when i first got my t23; the laptop would not charge it, even with a bios downgrade. The indicator light would stay orange, and mobmeter would show it wasn't charging at any rate. The seller asked me to mark the packet "return to seller" to avoid postage costs and said he would refund when he got it.

This took almost 6months, but he did actually send me the refund, which I was really suprised by!

Dont buy chinese batteries, that's my experience.
