WSOD

#1 Post by fleamourian » Sat Jan 29, 2011 11:54 am

I had a white screen of death when booting a CDR/RW back along. I thought it to be my ODD playing up. I have now replaced but encountered another WSOD today when booting from HDD. I left alone for a while & very strangely the laptop, left charging, booted all by itself. Whereupon WSOD was gone?!? I have since rebooted several times with no error.

Is this just a case of MCS (Mysterious Computer Stuff?) Or symptoms of a much deeper malady? Most decidedly odd...

Is this just a plain white screen with nothing on it? If yes, it is most likely a loose LCD cable connection at the back of the LCD panel, the LCD cable, a loose LCD cable connection at the systemboard, or the LCD itself.

Thanks, here's hoping I did not chuck away a perfectly good ODD. Still it was read only but maybe a perfectly good spare.

I sometimes get odd looking sections of screen real estate & need to press the casing where ribbon cable connects to rear of LCD to restore. I guess it can work it's way loose over time?

I may buy a new LCD bezel surround while I'm at it, as is cracked.

Anyone have any ideas as to keeping ribbon cable secured to rear of LCD? I'm thinking duct tape.

I don't believe that you are being serious, but if you are...

I am not a duct tape person. Over time, the heat will cause the glue to dry out and lose adhesion.

I'm thinking all LCDs run cold?

Correct me if I'm wrong. I also remember removing factory standard tape from a laptop's LCD screen once.

I use black electrical tape all the time, in place of the white tape IBM uses.

I'd use electrical tape, but anything's better than nothing.
I recently replaced the backlight on a Sony Viao, (I've almost recovered) and it seemed like the entire laptop was made out of ribbon and tape, never mind the LCD!

[edited: it was a Sony backlight, not a blacklight]

The only issues you may have with ducktape is that it is that A) it is thicker than other types of tape (as long as it is high quality with the threads in it), and B) if you ever have to remove it, it tends to break down, and if it does not loose adheasion like mentioned above, it increases to the point that it is impossible to get off. I would reccomend electrical tape for those two reasons. (on the outside of the case, ductape is the way to go - it is anti-theft as well as a repair method   )

Finally got round to examining rear of screen after booting several times to white screen, would not go away with massaging rear lid. No obvious detachment. Am hoping there is some mileage in replacing whole LCD ribbon cable.

I need to purchase a new screen bezel while I am at it, but just silly prices on eBay. Bought 2 bezels at a reasonable price, but both were T20 (I think?) affairs with less screen real estate.
