Which T61 keyboard is the best?

#1 Post by astral » Tue Aug 06, 2024 8:48 pm

Guess who's T61 has the ALPS keyboard...
It's extremely, incredibly mediocre. I'd like to replace it with either the Chicony or the NMB board, but I can't find much discussion on which is the better of the two. I'm sure it comes down to preference, but what's the general consensus if there is any?
If it helps at all, I love the Alps keyboard on the T4x, and the NMB on my 7-row modded T430, so if one of those two T61 boards has a similar feel, that would be the one I'd be after.

Thanks!

Good to know. I think I could probably find an NMB board on eBay for just what it would cost to ship one from the UK, probably more cost effective to just stick to local. I appreciate the offer though.

The Chicony variants are the worst IMO (to the point where they might just be the worst switches I've ever used, period). It's funny because Chicony made decent desktop keyboards so I don't know how the contracted ThinkPad keyboards went so wrong.

The ALPS don't feel as good as the NMBs but have the best TrackPoint buttons.
