Foam tape for fan

#1 Post by lmittell » Tue Feb 25, 2014 8:13 pm

Can anyone point me to a source from which I can purchase thin foam tape, like that used on heatsink fans?

I've sourced some before from a local Window/Glass store. I've seen some in hardware stores to but that's a while ago.

Or check for "thermal pad" or "thermal tape" on eBay.

Thanks, I'll check out a glass shop or two.

Thanks, but an Ebay search on "thermal tape" yields double-stick heat-conductive tape, which is not what I'm after. What I want is the single-stick stuff applied to the fan housing to help channel airflow.

Auto Part House: Camper Shell Tape.
You will need to cut it to size.

The camper shell tape I've seen is far too thick. The stuff I'm talking about is no more than 1 mm thick. Maybe you're referring to something I haven't run across. If so, please point me in the right direction.

Too wide, but I think the thickness is fine. It will squeeze down nicely.

Just googled Camper Shell Tape, and this was the first one.

The 50 mil stuff ought to be about right, but it's over 30 bucks! Of course, a roll would last me several lifetimes. Not having several lifetimes at my disposal (though I wish I did) I'll have to make do without it.

Oh well, c'est la vie. Into each life a little gpu overheating must fall.

They also make double sided tape in Grey and White. Use the White, but dont pull the backing off of one side. The Grey stuff is permanent. Small roll is under $5USD.

You know, I don't know why I didn't think of it before, but the fuzzy portion of velcro self-stick tape would probably do. It's not laterally flexible like foam tape, but it comes in generous widths that could be trimmed to shape with an x-acto knife or a razor blade.
