Poor T601f GPU performance

#1 Post by wujstefan » Sat Oct 29, 2016 2:46 pm

Hello,

I recently tried out a 3dMark 2006 on my system with close to default 3DMARK settings:
res 1600x1200
anti-aliasing disabled
texture filtering optimal
VS profile 3.0
PS profile 3.0
And all of this has pumped out just 954 3DMARK points.

My specs are T9300 / 8Gb / nvs140m@standard voltage/clocks / 240Gb SSD / Boe-Hydis UXGA LCD. NOS board.

I'd like to ask you for your experience checking the GPU with that one; since I've found reports with WAY (2x+) better results with standard systems...

Another thing: have anyone tried OC'ing this GPU on lower voltages to keep the heat on reasonable level? Mine GPU runs at 70C w/ ambient 23C; and I'd love to keep that while getting more power.

EDIT:
Some more info about my system:

bottlenecked by vRAM size.
my FX570m scored ~12000 under maximum OC when I turned off AERO and degraded color depth, but it doesn't perform better than X3100 in daily usage

....no way you can get a Fx570m to score 12000 points in 3Dmark06, even thou you tweak it. Pics or it didnt happen ;)

A standard config is just around 4000, a sligthly OCed around 5000

In the advanced dock with a 7750 i get around 12000 however
Thinkpad W500 (2.53 GHz P8700, 4 GB RAM, FireGL V5700, WUXGA)
Thinkpad T61F 14" (2.53 GHz QX9300, 6 GB RAM, Quadro FX570m 256 MB, SXGA). Advanced dock with AMD Radeon HD7750
Custom build ITX desktop (i5 4590, 8GB RAM, AMD R7 260X, custom watercooling)
Thinkpad 8, Fujitsu F-07C

FS: T61F

Well I pushed up RivaTune to OC my GPU to 600/900/1200 (so a max, 50% OC) and actually the temps feel pretty tolarable - it reaches 75C in FurMark test (4hrs long) with ~57-58 and fan on 1 when idle. Ambient temp is 23C.

Now the score floats aroud 2200 which seem a bit better. I wonder how big impact does the screen resolutio make; all tested on UXGA.

OK, since the issue seem similiar than before, I'm posting it here.

I've observed severe lags when watching low res video online. Like football highlights etc.

Tried a lots of different codecs and browsers, and nothing helped. Would be grateful for any reasonable idea since I'm out of them already...

Reasonable idea:
Open GPU-Z and check vRAM usage.
on my T61p FX570m, the vRAM usage is ~110MB when I just entered desktop and did NOTHING, my screen res is 1400*1050 SXGA+, for 1600*1200 UXGA T61p it's only gonna be higher. In my experience all vRAM are consumed at startup.
So when you watch online videos, vRAM usage is definitely gonna be much more than 128MB, which means it will almost definitely access the system RAM as vRAM
However this process is done via North bridge chip, and the speed is limited at PCI-E 1.0 x16, equivalent to some ~2000 MB/s, in comparison the direct access to system RAM is near 6000MB/s and the vRAM speed is close to 10000MB/s on T61p.

This is definitely a very severe bottleneck, turning off the AERO will help, but not much

And this is also the biggest reason for me to give up T61 and the experiment to solve the power supply issue for Quad Cores

ahh nvs140m i know you well

while you guys say memory speed is bad there's one other factor too that many overlook

its a 64-bit bus.... even in its day its not a good performer

its a CAD card

also your test parameters tend to reflect the reality of TODAY

back in 2007/8 whatever 3dmark was done at 1,024 x 768

i had two computers around that period

Q6600 8Mb w/ dual ATI 3850 256Mb 256-bit - I recall 11,000 marks

replaced with:

i7 920 12Mb w/ dual ATI 4850 512mb 256-bit 21,000 marks

I was big into benching game pcs back then.

I expect a T61 to bench maybe less than 1/4 of the Q6600. At best I expect 720p low to maybe medium detail at 30fps in BASIC 3d gfx games.

Yes - but also no.

I personally find nvs140m fitting my needs most of the time. I don't play games (or play really old ones), so it's not an issue. NVS140m works very good w/ Solidworks 2015 I use, so it's not an issue as well. streaming SOME videos turns out to be n issue.

I also observed that the same videos run pretty nice on integrated R61...
