How does the T60 Lid Switch work?

I've taken apart the lid mechanism completely, and am curious as to how the mechanism that activates standyby mode, or turns off the CCFL when the lid is closed works.

The light switches off when the lid approaches closing without actually closing, so I'm confused as to how it all works.

Seems like magic at this point.

Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

A Hall effect sensor and a magnet.
