T60 15" or 14.1" ???
T60 15" or 14.1" ???
I am planning to buy a T60 (my first thinkpad!). I love hi res screens. My desktop LCD is 1680x1050 with 20" Wide Screen Diag. It's perfect.
When I travel, I find a small screen difficult because I like a lot of windows open.
My concern is that the 15" screen at the higher res will be too small. I had a screen from dell at one time that was about the same res and it really was hard to read.
Perhaps screens and cleartype have fixed all of this, but I would appreciate all opinions on this topic.
BTW, the majority of my work when disconnected is office apps (word, ppt, etc) when I am at connected I do video and photo work.

biinkbok - use the search function and read some of the other threads that discuss this issue ad nauseam.
keep in mind that your 20" has a PPI of only 99. that's 99 pixels per inch. The 14.1" SXGA+ on the T60 has a PPI of 124, while the 15" SXGA+ panel is 117.
if you can afford a 15" T60p, you'll be looking at a UXGA panel with a PPI of 133.
whatever you buy, I highly suggest Liquid View:

the cleartype tuner is also an absolute necessity:

the bottom line is that you don't have to live with tiny text on a high resolution screen. there are lots of ways to change this, either via third party apps, adjusting the DPI, etc.
if you travel a lot, you'll want a 14.1" SXGA+ panel. if not, go for either a SXGA+ or UXGA 15" panel.

I'm here to tell you...
If you like SXGA+ on 14" you will love UXGA on 15".
I now know what I didn't like about my high res dells. The widescreens. With the height you get on 4:3, even 1600x1200 is very readable on this 15" IPS. Then you start adjusting font styles (use cleartype) and font dpi to make it perfect for you. I'm using default 96pt and it just looks perfect to me...
Also, I splurged on the 6 cell upgrade (yes UP) for my T60p and it made all the difference. It makes it like another laptop...that 9 cell really throws off the weight and ease of use (holding) IMO.
But go with the 15"!

I've always favored the versatility of SXGA+, and while IBM/Lenovo's 14.1" panel renders it exceedingly well, there is definitely something to be said for the added real estate, brightness, and clarity of the 15" Flexview LCD.
When I ordered my T60, I opted for the 15" Flexview screen in SXGA+ resolution. Since I neither need nor desire and onboard UXGA capability, the SXGA+ in 15" was an ideal compromise. That said, my T41 is a 14.1" model, and when portability is important, it positively shines. I guess it all depends upon where and how you plan to use your machine.

I'll offer the opposing opinion....
I travel often. I had a Toshiba Satellite computer with 17"
screen that had an amazing view, but was too [censored] bulky
(10 lbs.) to bring anywhere -- especially on airplanes.
It was a tough decision to go with the Lenovo 14" T60.
I knew it would be a big step down, but I chose the 14" over
the 15" just for sheer portability.
I am extremely happy with my 14" view. The great thing
about this laptop is that for the first time, I can easily tote
it around and it sits on my lap very comfortably.
Also, pricewise, the 14" came in cheaper so I had money
left over to add more memory.
Let us know how you make out.

I have a 14" T60p and I don't miss the 1600x1400 screen in comparison to the 15" A31p sitting next to it. It sure is a lot lighter and smaller, and I don't feel cramped for space on it. I find the A31p has text that is hard to read sometimes. I had set the T60p to use the larger fonts for a while, but I switched it back to normal sized fonts and haven't had any problems.

Can I simply swap out my T5500 CPU in my 1953CTO T60 with a T5600? Or my T2400 core duo in my 2623D6U T60?
