Dropped wireless requires reboot

#1 Post by mikesugar » Tue Oct 30, 2007 7:47 am

Hi,

I Had this problem with wireless no longer working after suspend or hibernate:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... ss+suspend

The problem was solved by the instructions for power settings at this link, but the page is no longer there.

http://blog.st-agnes.org/cs/blogs/the_c ... nt/34.ashx

Does anyone still have the actual pdf that was there or perhaps an alternative set of the same instructions.

Thanks.

if you want to change power management for your wifi adapter, do this;

Run > devmgmt.msc > expand Network Adapters > right-click your wifi adapter and select "Properties" > Power Management tab > uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."

a friend and myself have the same problems with our thinpads, his a T61, mine an x60 tablet, both of our wifi cards drop connectop after a period of inactivity, and won't connect unless rebooted.
I've already unchecked the box that allows the computer to turn off the device in power saving mode, but it still drops connection regardless, and I end up having to reboot each time

is there another step?

To fix the wireless disconnect problems do the following:
Steps

2. In Microsoft Windows. Click on Start. Right-click on My Computer. Click on Properties.
3. In System Properties Click the Hardware Tab.
4. Click on Device Manager.
5. Click on the plus sign for Network Adapters. [missing step in original]
6. Double Click on Inte(R) PRO/1000 PL Network Connection.
7. Click on the Advance Tab. Select Deep Smart Power Down. Change the Value to Disabled.
8. Double Click on Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection.
9. Click on the Advance Tab. Scroll down and Highlight Power Management. Un-Check to clear the Value “Use default value”. Set the slider to the Highest.
10. Click on the Power Management Tab. Click the check to De-Select the option to “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”. Click OK.
11. Switch Off your wireless adapter from the switch on the front of the laptop. Wait 10 seconds. Switch On.
12. You should be working!!!

AFAIK this problem existed with older intel wireless drivers. I experienced the same behaviour in XP and Vista. But since upgrading to the latest intel drivers from Lenovo i never had this problem again and DPD is enabled on my TP.

I have the same problem when resuming from hibernation. I've used the wireless adapter settings as recommended above, but I have the Intel 82566 network adapter, which does not have a setting that the one above does.

This is getting tiresome having to "repair" the wireless connection repeatedly.

I had the same problem for a couple of months after I bought my T60 8744-5BU in May '07. Here's the first thing I found that helped:

Open ThinkVantage Access Connections, > "locations", >"manage profiles", (highlight a profile) > "edit", General settings: UNCHECK
"disable this wireless radio when changing locations". Do this for each of your profiles. This initially helped somewhat, but the problem still happened now and then.

The final cure was downloading and installing the latest drivers for my wireless card from the Lenovo "downloads and drivers" page. Make sure you enter your TP model # or let the site detect it. The clincher was that the "summary of changes" described the problem fixed to a "t"! My wireless has been problem-free since.

BTW: I am not a big fan of the ThinkVantage update software and package server. I use the software to detect updates available, but prefer to go to the "downloads and drivers" page to get more information on the updates and then download and install one at a time only what I want.
