Can I fit a 14.1'' SXGA+ from T40 into my T60?

#1 Post by manteiv » Tue Oct 05, 2010 8:35 am

My T60 1951-4mu has the 14.1 XGA screen. I have a spare 14.1 SXGA+ from an old T40. I want to take them apart and swap the LCD pannel itself.

Do you think it might work?

It will physicall fit and connect, however, if it's an original T40 LCD, it won't work.

For LCDs to work properly in T60 series machines, they need an EDID chip that tells the computer about the display. T40 series machines used the cable to do that. Therefore, unless the T40 happens to have a replacement LCD that is much more current, then it probably does not have the physical EDID chip on it, and it won't work. (You can look for the chip on the back of the LCD panel; a Google search will show the location for the specific LCD panel.)

On the other hand, panels with the EDID from T60's or other machines will work on older machines, like the T40. Not much comfort in this scenario.

Great information...I always wanted to know the answer to that question.

Thanks

My experience is opposite, I tried to switch 15" LCD's in T43p(UXGA) and a T60(SXGA+). Older machine can't correctly work with the new panel, but T60 accepts an old LCD.
The cables are not compatible, of course, so I changed only panels. T60 works, because it can read the new EDID. But T43p can see only cable, so onscreen image is shifted and still adapted to UXGA.
Both of those panels has EDID chip, but yes, T43p don't use it. It takes information from the cable(with "UXGA" written), and PowerStrip can't see any EDID interface.

Ok, maybe very old T40 has LCD without EDID at all. But why, even my 1998 monitor has it.

In a T43p, you need a different cable for the SXGA+ panel and UXGA cable will give you the exact result you've seen.

Most of T4x panels do NOT have the chip, though. T43/p were produced over the same period of time for a year along with T60/p so LCDs were assigned according to availability...

So, you can say that I'm lucky it has EDID, and the only thing I need to swap these LCD's is a new SXGA+ cable?
There's some FRU 91P6892 on Ebay around 5-6$, hope it will fit.

No. I think the answer above was talking about 15" screens, mostly made by IDTech and BOE, which do have the chip, although the IDTech ones are mostly unflashed. The only 14" T4x screens I have ever seen with the eeid chip were made by BOE and they were mostly used in the R5x machines.

I successfully installed Samsung SXGA+ LCD from my old T41 into T60p by adding EDID chip, following the picture made by AlexeyTolstyh in this topic.
It is not very difficult if you have a basic soldering skill. Interestingly, the Atmel chip can be easily found on every computer memory module (used for storage of module SPD data)

The IDTech 15.1" UXGA in my T42p (later one, manufacture date 10/2005) does not have EDID at all.
