Looking at a T60 to buy -- any advice? +/- etc

#1 Post by BillMS » Fri Jan 21, 2011 12:05 pm

Hi,

A local Craigslist ad offers a T60 at an attractive price (for me). I don't need a 'top of line' model. [My primary laptop is a DELL D600.]

After my a22m died recently (BOD), I'm being super (overly?) cautious. I need (or want) an replacement; somewhat more up to date. (My t2x's and 600's just don't fill the bill. :) )

I did research the forum here for 'info', but didn't see any clear Pluses (or minuses).

I asked and the seller did email me the type -- 2007-42u.

The specs (as far as I can determine) look OK, though the seller said it has only a CD-R.

Any comments or suggestions will be very welcome.

Bill

Here are the full specs of that model (in case you were looking somewhere else):

Pretty low-end configuration for a T60, the LCD resolution being the biggest limitation as everything else (RAM, disk, optical) is easily and fairly cheaply upgradable.

As far as the machine itself goes, it is the common opinion of this forum, and of yours truly personally, that it is one of the nicer, more reliable machines Lenovo has produced. A good buy in most configurations.

Just to provide a price reference, I picked up a 2007-g3u for $219 on ebay. It was billed as a refurb, but it's absolutely pristine, looking as though it's never been touched by human hands, neither inside nor out.

It lacks a large HD, DVD-R, and bluetooth. Also, it has only 2 GB of RAM. But these shortcomings are overcome at minimal expense.

Thanks 'dr_st',

That was surely a fast response!

And thanks for the link -- it filled in some things for me.

The 60GB HD is OK by me -- my main desktop HD still has 20GB free; out its 40. :)

Now what to do? [Wife hopes I don't buy it -- guess just because I have about 15 plus systems in our small condo. They just don't understand.]

Thanks, particularly, for 'endorsement' of the T60. Much appreciated!

If I miss this one (told seller that I was 'still researching' it), I'll look into other T6x.

Thanks again.

Larry,

Thanks for the input. Looks like you got a sweet deal - conditionwise etc.

I looked on Ebay day or two ago -- saw many T60s (if in good condition) going for $200-even 400.

My 'deal' is for $150 -- but I haven't seen it yet either. We'll see -- maybe (if not sold already).

If you are patient, you can do better!
I picked up this T61 on eBay:
Product: ThinkPad T61 8897-03U [change]
Original description: Core 2 Duo T5270(1.4GHz), 1GB RAM, no HD, 14.1in 1400x1050 LCD, Intel X3100, no optical drive, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, 6c Li-Ion (still good for ~1.5 Hrs.), WinXP Pro

I'd been hunting for one of these (everybody's ideal) for almost 8 months!

I'm waiting for a T60 to come in. I don't know the processor number or display resolution, I just do know it a 15". I think it's a T2000 series.

Intel Core Duo @ 1.83 GHz
1 GB RAM
60 GB Hard Drive
DVD/CD-RW Optical Drive
15" Screen Size
Fingerprint reader
ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 @ 1024x768
3 USB inputs
Microphone/speaker inputs/outputs
Built-In WiFi

Will be interesting to get it, I love my X40 so I am hoping this computer keeps up the same quality (I'm sure it does). I paid about 250 for it CAD.

I had no reason to look further, because I just wanted to swap in the HD from my failing 2007-63u and go. I wanted to avoid reloading the OS and the myriad programs I use. Maybe it would have worked with a T61, but I'm betting there'd be a problem or two.
