14' UXGA

#1 Post by prggmr » Thu Jul 21, 2011 11:17 pm

Hello everyone!

I just recently acquired a thinkpad T60 and am looking to do some modifications, I have already bumped to a T7200 from the 2500 which was installed, my next step is to add some ram and then I am looking to go with a UXGA.

So my question is, has anyone succesfully modded a 14' T60 to a UXGA?

I do not mind if I need to use non-ibm/lenovo parts, I've done some research and found that the 15' is possible but haven't found a definitive YES YOU CAN for the 14.

Thanks!

There was indeed a 14" UXGA LCD. It was offered on some Dell laptops in the early Pentium M days. I believe it was a Sharp LCD. It has been transplanted into some T4x machines around here, but I haven't seen it go into a T60 or know what's involved in transplanting it. Supposedly, there's some here, but I have no knowledge of the seller.

Yes, it has been done already by someone from this very forum. Check out http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=69978 for detailed discussion about this mod. Additionally, please see also the followup thread http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=73465 for for further information. Last not least, use Google with http://www.google.com/search?q=LQ141U1L ... nkpads.com to search this forum for threads mentioning the 14.1" UXGA display.

At the time of writing this reply, the mentioned 14.1 LCD panel "Sharp LQ141U1LH02" is available from eBay dealer http://myworld.ebay.de/fibica_store from Hongkong via auction http://cgi.ebay.de/330591766408.

I hope you have very good eyes, because the DPI value of a 14.1" UXGA display appears to be rather tiny in comparison:

Code: Select all

        inch ratio horiz vert dpi
SXGA+ 14,1 4/3 1400 1050 124,11
UXGA 14,1 4/3 1600 1200 141,8 <------<<<
UXGA 15 4/3 1600 1200 133,33
WSXGA+ 15,4 16/10 1680 1050 128,65
WUXGA+ 15,4 16/10 1920 1200 147,02

I recently preferred to switch a T61 15.4" WUXGA display with a 15.1" T60 UXGA display (with T61 mainboard/CPU/RAM built in) because it was so much less eye strain for me - not mentioning the added IPS/Flexview benefits.

Thnx for the post rumbero, I'll check this out!

Great find on the eBay listing.

If I successfully get this modded I'll post up a howto.

I used this UXGA panel for about three years -- see http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=47899 . For me, 141.8 DPI was easily tolerable. But in terms of viewing angle and contrast, this panel isn't very good, probably a little worse than the 14.1" 1400x1050.

When I bought that T42, I knew that the laptop wouldn't last forever (because of the GPU) and thought that after the laptop had died I would just transplant the panel into a 14.1" T60. But I found a better solution: selling the T42 for parts and getting a Panasonic Toughbook CF-Y4. To me, a 3.4-lb 14.1" 1400x1050 CF-Y4 is better than a 5.5-lb 14.1" 1600x1200 T60.

Thanks Piano*.... I would agree !
However I wouldnt spend any more money on my 14ich t43p , as I feel its not worth while now
I would mind adding that screen to my t60P 2007 model ( but the current screen still very good- well so far !)

@rumb* .. thanks for the links > great post
will look into it also
post results when I get around to doing something
thanks again
