X40 CCFL bulb replacement FAIL

#1 Post by ds190 » Sat Dec 29, 2012 10:27 am

The LCD of my X40 went dark, but with the image visible with a light shining on the screen and external monitor output fine. Followed the HMM and info from websites to replace the CCFL from ebay source. The replacement CCFL flashed on at power up for 1 second, and then went dark. Unlike the poster that succeeded with this repair last month, fail for me. Image remains visible in the dark screen.

Do I now assume it is a bad inverter board? I thought that if some image was visible on the screen, the inverter is ok. If not, any site you rec to buy a replacement? Or should I buy a “parts only with working screen” X40 off fleabay?

I like my light but so slow X40 (P m 1.1mhz, 1.2 G RAM, 30G HD, WIFI) and also have the Ultrabay (DVD & 3.5 floppy) and both normal & large batteries, so will keep it alive someway :)

Thanks.
X40, X22, Inspiron 1300, Sharp Actius AV18, HP IPAQ.

If you haven't shorted the CCFL contacts anywhere, then a faulty inverter could be the problem.
Cheaper than a 'new' screen or lid or even laptop.

I would not give up yet...I am enjoying my "reborn" X40 after the CCFL tube replacement. Have installed Windows 7 32bit since and it runs very fast for such an old laptop. I did invest in a SSD a long time ago. That was the main reason I replaced the CCFL tube. Still plenty of life left in this old but sexy laptop...

The purpose of the inverter is to convert a small DC voltage into a very large AC voltage. It has nothing to do with the activation of the pixels in an LCD; it merely provides the proper voltage and current to keep the CCFL lit.

That's why I said "if he didn't short the CCFL...", the display seems to be OK otherwise.

Have you managed to come up with a solution to this problem because I am having the exact same issue. Works for a few mins then shorter and then for a brief second. There is an image there just way too dark
