I have retail XP install on my x30, I wasted the default IBM installation the very first day after seeing all that bloat that was included. I then installed XP + just neccessary drivers for my model. No problems at all if you know your way around drivers and updates and such. I'm considering adding is software updater (or whatever the official name is) to simplify driver upgrading but then again I don't update that often anyway (don't fix if it ain't broken).

Only thing I'd deem "a must" for me is access connections. I have up to ten profiles and I wouldn't imagine handling different network setups otherwise. Other than that the vanilla XP will run just fine once you install drivers it doesn't natively come with.
