x41 tablet running vista

Just wanted to let everyone know that i am running windows vista on my x41 with 1.6ghz and 512RAM and 40GB. It's not too slow, and with an extra 1gb of ram and a 60GB HD, it should run nicely. aero doesn't work though.

I ran vista for a while on my 1.5ghz x41t with 1.5gb ram.

It ran pretty smooth but as you said, Intel GMA 915 doesn't work with Aero. That being said, I didn't find the tablet features significantly better and without Aero I really saw no reason to run Vista so I went back to XP

the real reason i have vista is i lost the IBM restore disks and tablet edition xp is so hard to find.

but vista is fine. aero doesn't really add any value to vista anyways and vista is running great. i think i would choose vista over xp tablet edition even if i had the disks now that i experienced how fast it runs.

Hmm, would it be possible to perform a standard XP install and add the extra Microsoft/Lenovo goodies? I have an SP2 install disc if that's the case...

You will need XP tablet edition to perform a clean install and then install the MS/Lenovo goodies later on. XP standard and tablet edition are different versions and require different product keys. The tablet edition comes on two disks, the first disk is a standard XP install and the second one gives the tablet specific functionality. A standard XP will work fine except the tablet will function like any other laptop.

If the tablet is still under warranty then a case for the original RR disks can be made with IBM/Lenovo. I would suggest getting them though, just for a backup.

In my opinion Vista offers better tablet utilities and enhanced functionality than XP tablet. Its handwriting recognition is also better. Moreover, a standard Vista has built in tablet utilities no special version is required for installation.

I loaded Vista and office 2007 on my x41t today - and so far its great. The fact that Vista automatically accounts for tablet functionality is really impressive.

My only gripe is my inability to utilize the built in SD card reader for Readyboost - I have a high speed SD card from san disk - but it still fails to meet readyboost specs - which tells me the reader is subpar.

Has anyone else had better experience with x41's SD reader and readyboost???

I installed vista using a trimmed down version made via vLite and I found vista to run just as fast, if not faster on my x41 than xp tablet edition.

Firstly, readyboost doesn't do much. Secondly, most SD card readers are slow speed. The manufacturers might figure that they "just don't need to be fast" - but I disagree.

I have read reports that if the SD card is formatted as NTFS, it has better luck with the Readyboost check.

Whether Readyboost does much or not is one thing, but I can imagine that anything that helps take some load off the 1.8" HDD can only help system responsiveness...

If you hack the registry - lowering the read/write access requirements of readyboost - it will work - but that is really defeating the purpose - Would a PCMCIA to SD adapter speed things up???

All other things on the laptop seem fine.

I am definitely not setting any land speed records - it is definitely slow when doing multiple processes - but its acceptible (for now)

I had a user running a X41t with vista for about six months with no complaints other than it was a bit slow. I think the HDD was the limiting factor, something about those 1.8" drives...
