X31 Dead? Help!

#1 Post by robpm » Thu Jan 24, 2008 8:16 pm

I have an X31 that I've had for a little over a month, with ultrabase. After a lot of work to reinstall IBM/Thinkpad programs and the like, it was working just fine until two days ago. Turned it off and now it is deader than a doornail. Won't turn on. javascript:emoticon('')
Crying or Very sad

I tried attaching the power supply directly to the X31 and not the ultrabase. Nothing. I tried it in different outlets. Nothing.

Then I swapped the battery out and tried a different battery. Nothing. Changed power supplies to a slightly more powerful one. Nothing. I get no lights, nothing.

Before I go spend money on diagnostic work, does anyone have any suggestions for isolating the problem so I can minimize the cost of repair.

We haven't had any noticeable power surges or outages, but if I didn't know better, I'd think something was fried. Funny, because I had a small IBM power adapter rather than the larger aftermarket version it shipped with from the seller.

This is my wife's little internet surfer with benefits (Office), so I am in deep doo-doo if I can't figure out how to fix it.

Helllllpppp!

Try this:

- remove battery and disconnect AC
- press and hold power switch down for 15 secs.
- repeat the press and hold about 10 times
- on the last cycle, press and hold the power switch for 30 secs
- pop in the battery, hook up the AC adapter and try to power it up

That's due to charge built-up in the capacitor which you just drained.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

I realize I'm digging up an old topic for the X31 folks ... but has a solution to this (other than draining the capacitor) been found?

My problem (these days) seems to be related to simply closing the lid whenever I'm running on battery power -- it won't come back up. It doesn't go into suspend, it doesn't shut down "properly" ... it just turns off and won't come back on without the aforementioned "drain the capacitor" solution.

Simple enough to do ... only bothers me for a minute ... it's just the principle of the thing.

Would a new mobo solve this? Probably ...
