X61 SD card slot freezing

#1 Post by Anastasius » Sun Jul 13, 2008 4:25 am

My SD card slot freezes X61 after several sleep/wake up cycles.
I thought those were problems with ReadyBoost, but now I know definetly - it is something wrong with SD slot, because now I don't use ReadyBoost at all, but computer sometimes gets frozen, when I try to access SD card which is always being insered into the slot.

It gets frozen so deeply - I cannot even reboot when it happens!
Does anyone experience the same? Maybe there exists a known solution?

You did not state what operating system/version you are running. If you have Windows XP (SP1 or SP2), then install the following HotFix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934428

If you cannot find the file to download the fix, then send me a PM (Private Message) with your e-mail address and I'll send them to you (4 files/total 500KB)

I just have to report I finally solved the problem by installing the latest updates mentioning ReadyBoost from Microsoft. So it appears to be a Microsoft problem.

Are you removing the SD card when the computer is in sleep mode? I recall that causing the problem you are reporting... there was a microsoft vista patch to bring back the SD slot... but I think you need to be careful not to remove the card while the computer is in sleep mode even after the microsoft patch.

Its been awhile so I don't remember all the details. A search on the microsoft site might show you something.

Nope :( I do not remove it at all. The SD card stays in my slot during all the time.

Did anybody get to work it out...?

I'm experiencing possibly the same problem (maybe two)...

On the X61T, sometimes the computer will "start to freeze" after waking up from standby/sleep. I say "start to freeze" because opened applications behaved normal in the beginning, but starting new applications, depending on which one, might or might not succeed. Gradually, the system became less and less responsive and wouldn't even respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL.

Removing the SD card (ReadyBoost enabled) brought the system back alive immediately.

Haven't tested "only SD, no ReadyBoost" situation, and there's no Turbo Memory module.

I'm having a similar problem on the X41T but I'm not 100% sure whether it's the card change or the recent program (eBoostr) update.

Is it the SD slot...? Or ReadyBoost...?

Edit: Similar issue...? http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/mess ... ad.id=1587

From the latest Active Protection System:
Version 1.63
(Fix) Fixed an issue where the system might cause system hang when the ReadyBoost feature was enabled on Windows Vista.
Let me see if it fixes the problem.

Update: No good, the problem persists.

I had a severe issue with hanging when using the SD Card reader on an X61 Tablet, and it turned out to be due to MacDrive software (since fixed).

I'm guessing that any software that interacts with storage drivers might be a candidate. Try updating the Intel Matrix Storage driver?

Have not had any issues whatsoever with the SD Card reader since sorting out MacDrive.

I suspect so too.

Although the latest Intel Matrix driver didn't seem to help through.

Maybe it's something else... Acronis? ESET? Anyway, I've given up ReadyBoost for now.

After installing Vista SP2, I gave ReadyBoost a try again. So far, after a few days, the freezing issue as encountered before have yet to occur.
