x60s screen upgrade options?
x60s screen upgrade options?
I have an X60s (non-ultralight). Nice machine, but the screen is just horrible, even for Lenovo (in terms of contrast and color accuracy). Is it possible to upgrade to a higher-quality panel? I'm fine sticking with XGA... I think SXGA+ might be a little too dense on a 12" screen anyway. I'm tempted to just buy a new panel off Ebay (i.e. http://cgi.ebay.com/380225851423) and try it on the chance that I just have an especially bad screen in mine.
Re: x60s screen upgrade options?
It is possible, it's quite an involved process and expensive too. See here. By the time you built the jumper harness and make the cable you'd better off just buying a X200 and dropping in the Hydis HV121WX4 LCD, which is a straight swap. Buying a X60t or X61t if you want SXGA+ is another option.

Why do you think that screen will be any better than what you have right now?

I bought recently two X60, I must say that screens brightness was so dim, I just cant use them. So I sold them quickly away. Never again X60.

They probably an old, dying, backlight. 150 nits is not that dim.ibmfreak wrote:I bought recently two X60, I must say that screens brightness was so dim, I just cant use them. So I sold them quickly away. Never again X60.

The brightness is capped at about 70 % when you are on battery. There is a setting i the BIOS to give you 100 %.ibmfreak wrote:I bought recently two X60, I must say that screens brightness was so dim, I just cant use them. So I sold them quickly away. Never again X60.

I think he means contrast, while it goes pretty bright, it is a bit washed out. it is a major fault with these... they obviously cheaped out onthe screens and is a bit odd considering their original retail price.IvanAndreevich wrote: They probably an old, dying, backlight. 150 nits is not that dim.
it is off the chart when compared to quality modern screens.

funny thing is even modern lenovo use lousy screens
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3886/leno ... ad-x100e/5
http://www.anandtech.com/show/3638/leno ... thinkpad/3
its quite sad. apple seem to pick decent screens for their laptops even if the rest of their machine is impractical, lenovo should follow suit esp for their thinkpads, but instead they seem to have been cost cutting for quite some time now. it is quite bizarre as the rest of thinkpad design follows logical usability considerations..except for the screen of course!
"As a business machine, this rules. Amazing build quality, one of the best keyboards in the business, a matte screen, and basically everything else that that has made the ThinkPad line the standard of the business class for the last twenty years. Magnesium alloy chassis, steel hinges, rugged plastic, rubberized exterior coating, spill-proof keyboard, TrackPoint, Thinklight, the X201 has them all. Granted, this also means that an unwelcome ThinkPad family trait - poor quality LCD panels - is in order too (and no, the old T43p’s 15” IPS panels don’t count; those are ancient history at this point.) Having matte displays is a good thing, but when they’re poor quality panels with low contrast ratios, they’re not so appreciated.""
