X60 Verizon configuration...

#1 Post by nickpoore » Sun Mar 05, 2006 4:28 am

My thoughs on the built-in Verizon card...

I got my X60 this last week, and love the fact that I ordered it with the built in Verizon card.

I had a Verizon 620 card with my old laptop, and hated the fact that the antenna suck out over an inch, which meant that I needed to manually remove the card every time I put the laptop back in the laptop bag. It was a pain.

Now, I've been playing around with the IBM connection manager for the first time ever, and am actually impressed at how much I like it.

Here are my suggestions on how to setup the IBM Connection Manager.

Firstly, configure a LAN/WiFi connection.
Create a new Profile.
Tell it "Best Available network" - this will allow you to have LAN or WiFi.
Configure all your WiFi settings.
Configure your options settings (such as default printer and home page) if you wish.
Save the new profile.

Create another proflie for the Verizon.
Select the "Connect using Access Connections" option.
Save the new profile.

In Access Connections...
Click on Configure then Location Switching.
You can select any or all of you configured LAN/WiFi profiles. (Select the ones you use on a daily basis.)
There is an option at the bottom
"When no other connections are available, connect through wireless WAN".
Check this, and select your Verizon profile.
Save these settings.

You have no configure your X60 to connect via LAN and then WiFi and then WWAN.
Basically, it will always use the best connection possible, and will use the Verizon card as the last solution.

I also found that I had to fiddle with manually selecting my Verizon profile, and manually switching back to one of my other proflies. But it did work in the end.

This took me a little trial and error, as well as a call to tech support.

Good luck, I hope that this helps.
