Okay, I've seen several people asking about what configuration they purchased and why.
I bought this model: 1709-97U.
It has the Dual-Core T2400 processor with 1GB of RAM and 100GB (5400rpm) drive.
It has WiFi, Bluetooth & Verizon card.
It came with an UltraBase with DVDRW drive.
It came with a 1 year warranty.
I bought an additional ultrabase: 40Y8116
Two work better for me than one.
I bought an extra 1GB memory module: 40Y7734
This give me 2GB total.
I bought a floppy drive: 05K9276
IBM makes a great USB floppy drive.
I bought an external DVD/CDRW drive: 40Y8637
I wanted the IBM one vs the Targus one, so that everything matched.
I bought a 3-year extended warranty: 41C9334
This includes accidental damage.
I bought an AC/DC power adapter: 40Y7630
I bought three (3!) regular power adapters: 40Y7696
=======================
Now, to explain what I bought and why.
I have an office at home.
I put the ultrabase with DVDRW at home, with it's own dedicated power supply.
I put the ultrabase with no DVD at work, where it's connected to an LCD monitor & power supply.
I have a power supply in my living room, so I can charge the laptop if I happen to be working in front of the TV (again.)
I have the AC/DC power supply in my car, and will often charge the laptop by turning it sideways in the carrying case, and plugging in the power supply in the passenger seat footwell.
I have a power supply, CDRW & Floppy in my laptop bag.
================
Basically, I rarely burn CD's at work, but do burn them at home.
I like the ability to put the laptop in the ultrabase at home when I'm working on my desktop.
The ultrabase's do not come with their own power supply, which is why I bought so many of them. Luckily the new 65W power supplies are very cheap.
My laptop bag is what I take into customer sites. (I'm a network consultant.)
It is small and fairly light.
The CDRW & Floppy means I can do whatever I need to while I am at a customer site.
I rarely need a power supply at a customer site, but there is one right there in my laptop bag should I need it.
I also have my laptop setup to use LAN/WLAN/WWAN in that order, so that no matter what customer site I am at, I have connectivity.
The warranty is there to protect me from breaking one of my main work tools.
I have the next business day on-site warranty with full accidental damage. I have never dropped & broken one of my laptops, but with the accidental damage, they never argue with you if the laptop broke, or if you misused it. They just turn up and fix it.
The CDRW drive is interesting. It ships with an external power supply, but you don't need to use it. I don't get why it ships with one if you don't need it, but there you go.
The CDRW is quite fast. I have uses all functions while on battery power - read/write CD and read DVD. All functions worked.
I have not tried to boot from this drive.
The memory.
Buy maxing out my memory at 2GB, I can turn off the windows swapfile without worrying about a maximum memory limit.
This gives me slightly better performance.
==================
There, now you know what I purchased and why.
(Well almost, I purchased a 60GB, 7200rpm drive from Lenovo also, just so that I could play around with Windows Vista, but that's a completely different story.)
