20-30% CPU on idle

#1 Post by Sportler2k3 » Sun Jan 25, 2009 4:10 pm

Hey there,

my x61s is idling!!!!! between 20-30% CPU and sucking my battery down.
processexplorer tells me that the process "(hardware) interrupt" is "the bad guy" using that much cpu.

has anyone any infos what i can do to solve the problem? is the problem maybe something with the new intel matrix storage driver? anyone has/had the same problem?
i havent found any useful stuff with google, it tells that it can be overheating, or ANY driver on the system... so give me your opinion. i will not reinstall xp, google tells that even this didnt solve the problem.

- its at 45-50 degrees so its not overheating,
- drivers are all the latest availiable and from ibm/lenovo
- im using xp 32-bit

what does it do in safe mode? or say using a Live OS? thats what I would try first. Then think about a re-install of the OS

It could also be the worm/virus.

try changing the settings in the power manager, so that then we can conclude whether the problem is genuinely from the CPU and not OS related!!

let us know what happens when you change the power settings of the battery and plugged in mode of the processor to medium performance...or anything lower will do!!!

hmm can you double check that you made the changes to that particular profile which you are currently using and also after making changes to the power settings did you restart the computer and check whether it has booted onto the power profile which you have made changes to!??

and also sometimes if too many programs or thinkvantage bloatware are there during startup, then even that could be the slicky theif sniping off ur processor and memory..make sure that you remove all the thinkvantage bloatware during startup that you pretty much dont use everyday!!!

to change those setting goto the start --> run --> type 'msconfig' and goto the startup tab and untick the necessary sotware that are booting up during your system boot!!

hope this one helps!!!

Dude I had the same with my X61. After few days of war I noticed that recently I've updated Intel Video drivers. Removed, installed previous version and now everything seems to work pretty cool. Process Explorer is always in my tray and it doesn't show any "Interrupts" process taking 20-30% CPU anymore.

Hope this would help you too

For those who will have same issue in the future, here is a proper intel video driver: http://rapidshare.com/files/191963619/7 ... 2.zip.html

grzechom, the link to the "correct" Intel video driver is not working anymore. Could you repost it?

Thanks a bunch and best regards.

I'm having this exact issue on my x61t on XP as well. Could somebody point me in the direction of a video driver that will fix this? The one posted a couple posts up (as previously mentioned) is dead.

FYI, I recently went from the initial install of Vista that came on my x61t when I bought it in late 2007 to XP Tablet from a set of Lenovo CDs. Then I let it download and install all Windows and Lenovo updates, so I assume it downloaded a new video driver then that caused the issue.

EDIT: I apologize for asking a question and then answering it myself only a few minutes later, but I figured I'd post what I found here in order to help other people with this problem. I was able to find the older video driver, and it appears to have fixed my problem. Looking at the expired link a couple of posts up, I Google searched for "7ld133ww" and found the following link:
http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/p ... d133ww.exe
If that link ever stops working, I suggest simply searching for "7ld133ww.exe" in Google because it appears to be hosted on a number of third party sites as well.

Hi alamysm, I installed this driver some days ago and it seems my problem is gone as well. Thank you very much!

thanks for the tips.... i noticed my x61s also suffering from hi cpu % during idle. it would go away if i put it on sleep/hibernate and turn it on again

but installing the older video driver really solved it

Same problem here on my x61T although not all the time, it only seems to happen if I unplug it, the OP had it at all times it seems?

I'll give the old drivers a try, they are here on Lenovo's site actually : http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 67838.html - 7ld133ww.exe (version 6.14.10.4860) there is also a version 6.14.10.4926 avaliable (7ld140ww.exe) - not sure why they have two available.

I checked the version that's currently installed and it's 6.14.10.5218

Does the latest X3100 driver version cause this issue?

Didn't check for that, don't think it would make a big difference, I think I checked it once in the past, where's the best place to see it?
