WWAN EvDO in OSX on T60/X60/Z60 (Sierra Wireless MC5720)

#1 Post by ssimon » Sun Mar 11, 2007 12:39 pm

I was poking around in my 10.4.8 Jas Install and under System Profiler I looked at recognized hardware. Going to the Hardware/USB section I noticed that OSX is recognizing my miniPCI Sierra Wirelesss EvDO card under USB devices as "Sierra Wireless MC5720 Modem"!!!

Here is the info reported by System Profiler under Hardware/USB Bus:

Version: 0.01
Bus Power(mA): 500
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: Sierra Wireless
Product ID: 0x0218
Vendor ID: 0x1199

For it to be visibe/enabled, you must 1st press Fn+F5 and the Bluetooth and WWAN lights will go on. WWAN light will go out, but it will still be ON

There is an Apple OSX Sierra Wireless program for the 595 cards HERE who's windows counterpart works great with the MC5720 card. Alas, even though it installs correctly it seems unable to find the card as it is looking for PCMCIA devices.

Since the card is obviously recognized I am wondering if an enterprising OSX expert might not be able to "point" the utility in the right direction or maybe make OSX see it natively in the Networking Utility...

Any ideas/solutions?

P.S. I clone posted this on the man OSX forum as well, just in case.
