Has anyone had any luck configuring System update to automatically download and install updates form a local repository.

I have downloaded the ciritical updates to a network share and configured System Update to look in that location. If I manually run System Update it looks in the local repository and only displays the critical updates I approved. However, the scheduling pice does not work.

I even tried running it from a command line, but it says I have no applicable packages available, when I know I do.

Does anyone have any experieince actually getting the auto download and install piece working. I need to push out the latest BIOS updates to about 75 machines. Some T60, X60 and T60 widescreen laptops.

Guessing from the 70 people who read this and no replies does that mean nobody uses the System Update in this manner

DOes anyone have any information on using System Update to retrieve update and install them automcatically using a local repository?

You need to set options in Thinkvantage system update, something like this.

Hi

I have a lenovo thinkpad Z61m with vista on it and for some reason
my system update(3) does not work an y more, every time I start it I get
the same error message:

a problem occurred while loading the system update configuration setting .
Please wait while System Update restarts.

when I agree to restart the same thing happens.
I have tried uninstalling system update and reinstalling it
but none of it seems to have any effect.

does anyone have any suggestions on how I might
be able to restore system update or where I might
find an answer?

I have found that some services must be started before System Update will function. I was getting the "problem loading configuration" error as well. In some other forums I heard that you had to have the "Server" service running automatically, but that didn't solve my problem. Turning on the "DCOM Server Process Launcher" finally fixed it for me.

I noticed that before I turned DCOM on that the Maintenance Manager would not run a task to automatically defrag my hard drive either.

Also, I forgot to mention that I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2. I'm not familiar with Vista, but I imagine that they have something equivalent to, or exactly the same as, the XP DCOM service somewhere

i checked and vista has same process but that is running for me and still no luck.. also odd that 3.0 after an ok tries one more time to start and then fails but 3.02 goes into a loop. i called up lenovo but if they have no other people calling in then basically go back to do full system restore.

SystemUpdate requires .Net 2.0 or later, so I would check that as well.

It may also be the case that SU requires more services than just DCOM or even DCOM + Server. Have you gone through your services to turn off ones that you weren't using? I turned a bunch of them off on mine and had to go through a lot of trial and error to find the right combination of services to make it work again. It would be really nice if Lenovo would tell us which services were required

thats the odd thing. i haven't touched anything and also it was working as i set it up with that software to do lenovo updates.

How are you setting the location for your local repository? Group policy or via the registry?

no i don't know much about it except that it used to work, removing/reinstalling hasn't helped and going back to 3.0 instead of 3.02 stop it from going into a loop
