I am using X201 since 2014, still going rock solid, recently upgraded to SSD with windows 10, it was very smooth. the laptop came with 4GB DDR3, 2x 2GB (1066), tried to upgrade to 8GB as per the maximum support X201 can provide, unfortunately 4GB DDR3 was not getting detected and had boot up problem, OS was constantly restarting.
I was told by the vendor that the model is not supporting it can have a max of only 4GB. I ran CPU-Z and got the result as max support is 8 GB.
What could be the problem? What else i need to check for the RAM to upgrade it to 8GB, 2x4GB
Appreciate any help this regard.
Thanks

X201 RAM Upgrade problem
Re: X201 RAM Upgrade problem
Welcome to the forum.
Indeed, X201 can handle 2x4GB. The RAM stick was probably just incompatible (i.e. DDR3L instead of DDR3, wrong voltage/timings, wrong number of ranks). I don't remember exactly the details of what this generation needs, but you can find such discussions on the forum (also look for T410, T510 discussions, as they are from the same generation and have the same limitations).

Re: X201 RAM Upgrade problem
This is what I'm using in my X201s for an 8Gb setup:
http://s186.photobucket.com/user/olex12 ... s%20Memory
1. Hynix 4Gb 2Rx8 PC3L 12800S-11-12-F3
Part #: HMT351S6EFR8A-PB N0 AA
2. Samsung 4Gb 2Rx8 PC3-12800S-11-11-F3
Part #: M471B5273DH0-CK0
Note that they are both 12800, but different timings and Hynix is 1.35V.
No errors with the mismatch though and both pass Memtest.
Regards.
Dave

Re: X201 RAM Upgrade problem
The naming system is like:
PC3L-12800
Number in boldface : RAM type. No number before the hyphen means DDR1; 2 for DDR2, 3 for DDR3, etc.
An "L" after that means it's a low voltage version. This first appeared in DDR3L, as its operating voltage (1.35v) is lower than regular DDR3 (1.5v)
Number with underline : approximate peak transfer rate in megabytes/sec; to get the RAM speed, divide this number by 8, so
12800 / 8 = 1600
So, what you have are two DDR3L-1600 RAM sticks. These are generally incompatible with the X201. Stick to DDR3-1333 or DDR3-1066.
