Does changing keyboard require some firmware compatibility?

#1 Post by zat » Fri Nov 05, 2021 8:37 am

Hello. I have found a second hand x220 in my area that has AZERTY (france) keyboard. I would like to use QWERTY (US) keyboard on that machine. I know with thinkpad x220 model, the whole keyboard is connected to the mainboard by a ribbon wire. Apart from taking out the AZERTY one and connecting in the QWERTY keyboard, do I have to change some firmware with the Thinkpad x220 machine? I will be using basic Linux on it.

Welcome to the forum. :)

No, you don't need to change the firmware.

You may not even need to change the keyboard at all, just switch over the keycaps (carefully!) and maybe adjust the keyboard layout.

However, I am not 100% certain on the above, as I've never actually worked with a keyboard that did not match the layout.

Add whatever language your new keyboard will be and select that in the small box on the lower right of the screen.
