system beep volume
system beep volume
Sorry if this has been answered before but I could not find anything.
The X301 emits a terribly loud beep when entering standby or waking up. The only controls I noticed is in BIOS allowing enable or disable. Apart from completely disabling the beep, is there any way to lower the volume?
Thanks
Parag

Re: system beep volume
On my ThinkPad, if I completely turn off the volume using the volume buttons on my keyboard, the standby and hibernation beeps disappear. I haven´t tried yet lowering the volume to see of those system beeps are affected by it too. This would be something for you to try out. Also please note that on my ThinkPad the volume buttons control the volume hardware-wise, whereas on the newer ThinkPads they control the volume only software-wise. I don´t know specifically about X301, but turning the beeps off from within BIOS may be indeed the only solution for you. Let us know if that works.paragc wrote:Apart from completely disabling the beep, is there any way to lower the volume?

Re: system beep volume
I believe that my Thinkpad (which is an X200 tablet) has the option to control some of those beeps in the Power Manager

Re: system beep volume
Can it also control how loud they are or just turn them on and off? (The Lenovo Power Manager version I use can only turn these things on and off.)mdjkim wrote:I believe that my Thinkpad (which is an X200 tablet) has the option to control some of those beeps in the Power Manager

Re: system beep volume
It appears, the only option through the volume keys, is to mute the beep. Raising or lowering the volume has no effect on the beep.
I guess I will continue to startle people around me with loud beeps

Re: system beep volume
I just bought two computers
X301 (wife) and X200s (myself)
I noticed on both of them the 'beep' is too loud. The beep sound volume on my old X61s is much more pleasant is it's not too loud like the X301 and X200s. I think Lenovo decided to just increase the volume for whatever reason. If you find a way to make it quiter let me know but I doubt it's possible.

Re: system beep volume
Why just don´t turn it completely off. As long as there aren´t so heavy problems with the machines that one wouldn´t be able to reach the BIOS (which, if happens, would be very very bad), the beeping feature is not really needed, right?...

no, it is really not a necessity - especially with SSDs to know when your system has entered standby (so it can be moved/handled).. but in general, I find it a "nice to have" feature just as a confirmation that the system did enter standby. There has been times when I put the lid down on my old T60p and the XP just hung there - never entered standby.

Re: system beep volume
But your ThinkPad does have the standby LED under the screen (it has the form of a half-moon)? If the ThinkPad has completely entered standby/hibernation, the LED (if it´s there at all) stops blinking. And when not in standby/hibernation, this LED isn´t active at all.paragc wrote:no, it is really not a necessity - especially with SSDs to know when your system has entered standby (so it can be moved/handled).. but in general, I find it a "nice to have" feature just as a confirmation that the system did enter standby.
