Hello,
I was wondering if a M.2 NVME (type b) would work in any of the slots on the T400 motherboard.

Please let me know.
The slots are mini pcie, the m2 won't even fit. You could get an m2 to SATA adapter.

Someone managed to make it work on a Sony Vaio Laptop: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1147704 ... -wadapter/

This adapter was used:
https://www.amazon.com/Ableconn-MPEX-13 ... 0779727FY/

Note that the adapter is for a B+M key NVMe SSD. Using it with an M-key NVMe SSD would probably require some modding.

If you need to boot from it, you'll need to install the Clover bootloader on the SATA HDD/SSD or on a USB flash disk.

I wonder what's the use of upgrading to a NVMe with a SATA adapter - pretty surely the transfer rates would be limited to SATA speeds of a regular SSD, wouldn't they?

AFAIK there is no such device (connect NVMe SSD to the SATA-only port of a laptop/desktop. The T460 and T470's ability to connect NVMe SSDs on the same port as the HDD only works because the connector on the system board already has PCIe signals wired-in. I suspect that it's related to SATA Express.

That's right & the same goes for M.2 with an adapter to SATA though not tested by me but I'm convinced that there will be no gain, to fully utilize M.2 advantages one has to have NVMe available.
