Does T510 support up to 32 GB of RAM
Does T510 support up to 32 GB of RAM
Gentlemen:
I know it supports 16 GB, but what prevents it to support 32 GB of RAM? Is it a BIOS setting that I can modify?
Also, can I install two SSD (one on CD-ROM bay) on T-510. Will that lead to crash/delayed start up from standby? Thanks!

Re: Does T510 support up to 32 GB of RAM
AFAIK the 510 have only 2 DIMM slots so it's hard to source 16 GB modules. In practicality why would you need 32 MB? Most who need a computer of this power would opt for a desktop or server PC.
You can install another SSD in the Ultrabay slot but there's not much speed advantage to be gained. For most people the purpose of the second drive is for storage, in which case a high capacity HDD is much more practical. A high capacity 7200 rpm spinner is more than fast enough for most application.

If that were true, Lenovo would never have conceived the W series.Cigarguy wrote:Most who need a computer of this power would opt for a desktop or server PC.

Re: Does T510 support up to 32 GB of RAM
Are you sure about the T510 supporting 16gb? I have 8GB in mine, and I've been told several times before that the chipset for that system (in my case with a core i5) cannot address more than 8gb. People have previously shown that the system won't go past the BIOS with more than 8gb, IIRC - regardless of how you format your HD or what OS you install.ircfas133 wrote:Gentlemen:

That said, if you have found a way to go to 16gb, I would love to know!

Re: Does T510 support up to 32 GB of RAM
The first generation iCore i5 and i7 duo core did not support more than 8 GB of RAM. I spent a couple of months last winter trying to make my T410 take even a single 8 Gb stick and it wouldn't boot. Supposedly the quad core would accept 16 GB of RAM.
Re: Does T510 support up to 32 GB of RAM
Sorry, my bad. I only installed 8 GB in my T510 that I used every day to run SAS software. I use RAM as a virtual drive so that SAS runs even faster (by using memlib command).
The Chipset I have for my T510 is:
Intel Core i7 M620 @ 2.67 GHz
64 bit Win 7
Just wondering if this Core i7 would support 16 Gb RAM in my machine?
It is interesting to note that my smaller T430s does support 16 GB ram for whatever reason, and it also have i7 chip inside. Don't know why the difference....
This T430s was distributed by my boss; what I really want is a W530 series with two 500 GB SSD (configured as RAID 0 so they run even faster) and 1 250 GB SSD mSATA installed and 32 GB RAM plus FHD screen. Of course, I would never configure so in lenovo website....

Re: Does T510 support up to 32 GB of RAM
The Core i7 620M in your T510 is limited to 8gb of RAM - it's a limitation of the memory controller on die in that chip - there isn't anything you can do about it.ircfas133 wrote:The Chipset I have for my T510 is:

The T430s is a Core i7, but it's a third generation Core i7 - the Core i7 in your T510 is a first generation Core i7 chip - that's the reason for the difference, memory support has increased over time.

Re: Does T510 support up to 32 GB of RAM
EDIT: I errantly said my T510 has an i7, it has an i5.
Is it possible to replace the i5 in the T510 with a third generation i7 (such as one from a T430s or other source) and achieve the greater memory support in the process, or is there something that would prevent that? I know, by comparison, that swapping P4m (yeah, that's how long ago I last bought a laptop before my new T510) is trivially easy between laptops. I don't know if swapping an i7 is as easy or not - or if swapping the CPU and nothing else would accomplish the ability to handle more RAM.wolfman wrote:

Re: Does T510 support up to 32 GB of RAM
Unfortunately no, the motherboard chipset in your T510 isn't compatible with the third generation Core i7 chip. In the P4M case, a lot of folks swapped machines with celerons for non-celerons or slower p4m's for faster p4m's, but that was within the same architecture. In this case, the fact that it says Core i7 in the names of both chips is just a marketing deal - the first generation Core i7 and third generation Core i7 aren't the same architecture or the same die size or the same packaging.
