ThinkPad T420s rubber feet?

#1 Post by Edward Mendelson » Sat Oct 06, 2012 10:38 am

Next question:

The rear feet on my son's T420s have gone missing. When I look on eBay, I can't find rubber feet for the T420/420s models, and the ones on offer for the T410 clearly don't match the T420s. Does anyone know where to find replacement feet for the T420s? Many thanks for any help.

They are normally part of the base misc. parts kit, but I cannot find anyone who has one for sale. The last time I looked, Lenovo thought it was worth $160 for some feet and a couple of stickers.

That's what I was afraid would be the case. Thanks for confirming this, anyway!

why don't you look for a new bottom panel, used on ebay? As long as it comes with the rubber feet (you may want to confirm before bidding) you are good to go!

When the new bottom panel comes in, just take the feet off of that and put on your son's laptop? I do that all the time here at work. Glue on the rubber feet if you need to when re-sticking them to another bottom panel.

If you want, I can check around at work to see if we have any old bottom panels that we never sent back/threw away that still have the rubber feet.

I read this post after I replied to your post about the locking tab.

I see that these are selling for about $85 on eBay. If you have one that has the rubber feet (and perhaps the locking part for the ultrabay) for a lot less than that, yes, please let me know. PM is fine. I'm in the US. Thank you again!

Returning to this question:

Does anyone know whether the rubber feet at the back of the T420s match the dimensions of the rubber feet on any other models? For example, is it possible that these are the same:

Thanks for any information about this one..

Feet from a T430s model are the same as the T420s model. I can get that FRU # for you if you need it. I do not know of any other models where they are the same though.

here are a couple of bottom panels for sale. If no interest in these (not mine and they are a bit spendy IMO), at least the pictures show the feet if you zoom in a bit.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/04W1702-Base-Co ... 20c7bed000

Looks like both of these have the cd drive eject parts if you were still looking for that

I did look through my stash of this stuff and I have no rubber feet...

Thanks for this. I should have reported that I got a warranty repair on the plastic parts, so the optical drive doesn't fall out - but they didn't replace the missing feet.

I've just had an offer from a friend here to send me a set of feet, so that problem is solved without spending $40 on a complete bottom panel.

This board is one of the best communities I've ever been part of. Many thanks to all!

My son's T430s is missing one of the back rubber feet. I asked Lenovo Australia where I might buy a replacement rubber foot & they sent me an email saying that they'd repair it under warranty & sent me a shipping box. I duly sent the PC back in the box & subsequently received an escalation email saying that the repair is not under warranty. My wife called them & they said that they wanted more than $200 to replace the rubber foot - $14 for the part, $140 for labour & the rest for shipping the PC to & from them. My wife asked them to ship it back unrepaired.

I am now trying to locate the FRU# for it & I think that it might be 04W1690 but I'm not sure. Could you pls confirm if this is the right FRU# or if it's something else?

Thank you for your assistance.

$140 for labor? Wow

The part # you want is 04W3489, which is a "kit" that gives you a bunch of misc bottom panel related items, of which rubber feet are included amongst these items.

I could send some used ones to you free if you pay the shipping

these auctions are still up and running. A different bottom panel would work for you as the rubber feet on the T430s model are same as the T420s model and they peel off just fine to re-use them elsewhere

Thanks for your offer, I only need one rubber foot & I'd gladly pay the postage. I'm in Australia for the foreseeable future so if there's a way I can pay you easily then I'd be most glad to. Alternatively, I'll try to order the part pack next week.

I didn't expect the replacement of a rubber foot to be such a big deal or expect that Lenovo would want so much to do so. I had expected that I could just walk into a PC repair shop & they'd fish one of them out of a jar & do it on the spot. It's been 10 days since I shipped the PC to Lenovo & it still hasn't come back. Not a simple experience. Live & learn.

Over the past 10 years I've bought more than 100 Thinkpads across 6 countries through our businesses & always through the local IBM/Lenovo website.

When my son first showed me the top of the range T430s which I'd bought him for $2k had lost a rubber foot I thought that it'd be a trivial exercise to get a replacement inch bit of rubber. Well, I was mistaken. If I were to use the replacement back which Lenovo's offering to sell me for $40, it's a bit like having a hip replacement when all I want is my shoe re-heeled.

With great thanks to Easy Wind who's offered to send me one, it's is so very much appreciated by me.

Hi Easy Wind,

I am in the same boat as the other members in this thread. I just got off the phone with lenovo and they are telling me i need to purchase the entire base assembly. I was wondering if you would happen to have anymore? I am missing just 1 rear rubber foot. im willing to pay the cost + shipping as i am sure it would be much cheaper.

another thing im looking for is the lcd 'hooks/latch' both left and right... if anyone has the pricing for this and FRU i'd really appreciate it. my research shows 04w3413 but im not entirely sure.

Thanks guys!

Hi there
I hate to necro a thread like this, but I didn't want to start a new thread asking the same question when this one is still open.
I'm also missing the rear rubber feet for my T420s, and I can't seem to find any on fleabay (shy of buying a new lower chassis, mine has a small chip but it's not worth a new one imo).
If anyone has any spares or extras they'd be willing to let go or knows where to get some on the cheap, please let me know! :)

@sqmaster1234
Try find them in taobao.com and use the third party agen taobaoring.com
The site is in chinese language, but I believe google translate will help. I found the lock for my t420 from that site as well.

Or get e.g. a T410 base, they use the same rubber feet.
As do many other Thinkpads!
Just grab any look-alike, rip off the feet, then cut them down to size if needed, before gluing them onto your laptop with SuperGlue/KrazyGlue/GorillaGlue/etc.

Good to know. I only knew that the T430 had the same feet - I wasn't sure which others were compatible. It seems like my options are growing :)

Looks like I have some shopping to do. Thanks for the info lembang and RealBlackStuff, I appreciate the quick replies.

FYI

The T410 model does not use the same rubber feet as the T420s model.

The only other model I am aware of that share the same rubber feet and that is the T430s model.

Super/crazy/whatever types of glue work yes, but a small dab of elmers also does the trick. Who doesn't have some elmers glue sitting around?

On a side note, someone with a 3D printer could probably make these themselves. It wouldn't be rubber but it would be better then nothing. I've been bugging a guy a work to do this for me but I can't seem to get him to start on this project.

Or if you really wanted to McGyver something, start hacking off the eraser off of a pencil and cut/paste/glue them into place, use as many as needed. That is if you don't want the finished product to look "pretty".

So, lots of choices for you.

Oh, and I've got extra rubber feet for sale if anyone is looking, new and used. Just shoot me a PM

Edward Mendelson wrote:Does anyone know whether the rubber feet at the back of the T420s match the dimensions of the rubber feet on any other models?
Rear feet measurements:
420s = 0.96 X 0.26 in.
T4x = 1.54 x 0.246 in.
420 = 0.700 X 0.349 in.
T400 = 0.75 X 0.33 in.
R61 = 0.732 X 0.337 in.
X61s =0.644 X 0.383 in.

So, no, the rear 420 feet and 420s feet aren't the same.
The FRONT 420 feet are the same as the 420s's rear feet!

The quick fix is to just grab a piece of rubber and stick it on the machine.

I cut a rectangular length from a bicycle inner-tube.
Wash it with water, cover one side with double sided tape and stick it on!
Gives more surface area of rubber, which grips better than original feet, and is flat and black.
Also it removable and leaves no marks, unlike many glues.

Don't have a bike tube? Try:
trackpoints, old shoe soles, band from underpants, gaskets, plunger, band from swimming goggles, rubber insert from bicycle light mount, rubber bands, old car tire, various auto parts, (some) tooth brush handles, rubberized lid from thinkpad, hair bands, vacuum cleaner attachments, rubber ducky, window and door sealing strips, rubber grommets, pleather, door mats, rubber stamps, party balloons, hoses, basketballs, older 'action figures', any range of tires, clamps, bottoms of some staplers, backs of calculators, refrigerator feet, guitar stand feet, various plastic clips, pencil erasers, rubber boots, latex gloves, core of a baseball, rubber bouncy balls, drive belts (from sewing machines, treadmills, washing machines), air pumps, water pumps, grips of some pens, grips from lock cutters, (various) grips, bumpers from trains and bumper cars, the feet of music boxes, sink plugs, other plugs, eye droppers, the front lip from dust pans, squeegee, the pump mechanism inside of thermal paste, pump mechanism from hypodermic needles, etc.

A thinkpad without feet is a shoeless child in winter.
