Does the T510 whitelist include CPUs?

#1 Post by WizardOfBoz » Tue Mar 03, 2020 7:03 pm

The spec sheets indicate that the T510 can take up to a 920xm CPU. My wife has a T510 that's dragging a little under Windows 10, and she doesn't want to spend any money on a new laptop. So I'm thinking fill out the max Gb of memory (to 8GB) and swap in a CPU with about twice the power.

Will that cpu swap work?

Also, for other things (like the wifi card*) where do we stand on whitelisted BIOSes for the T510? Is there a known-good site that has a reliable BIOS that will allow me to install an ac PCI card? Like a 7260?

Its a 4313.

920XM is a Clarksfield CPU, only W510 can use those (and exclusively so). The T510 can only use Arrandales. The top CPU the T510 can use it i7 640m 2.8 ghz, not much faster than whatever i5 is already installed.

Thanks, I was going off the spec sheet which included the 720QM, i7-820QM, and i7-920XM. If I'm understanding this all, those CPUs were available on a different version of the T510.

Thanks, Real Black Stuff.

I have three questions. All responses most appreciated.
1) The listing given is for the T510i. Same BIOS as the T510? If not, is the whitelist-wiped BIOS for the T510 posted anywhere?
2) I haven't been able to get SendSpace to send... anything. I click on the download button and nothing happens. Do I have to sign up, or install some sort of malicious software to get this site to work? Any ideas?
3) Is there a site that has the current W530 (not T510) BIOS with WL removed?

I seem to recall using a Serge-modified whitelist-purged BIOS at one point. Is Serge still "in business"?

Thanks again,

Wiz

1) They use the same BIOS.
2) The links were working when I checked them out this morning.
3) 1vyrain is your T/W/X xx30 friend.

Ah, got the T510 rars, thanks. Turns out SendSpace just stops if you have Adblocker. If you turn Adblocker off, SendSpace tries to download pernicious software and open a pop up ad. Norton blocked the softaware, and I didn't really want Krispy Kreme donuts (the offending ad, which popped up full-screen). Anyway it was a minor hassle that was fixed and I thank you. I'll check this out and see if I want to do it on my wife's computer. If I do, a 7260AC goes in and we have better communication!

BTW, I'm comparing the performance of my W530 which still compares well with new laptops that retail for 1500 or more, to the fairly poor ability to age that we see in the T510. I guess one could point out that they're both pretty bomb-proof setups. Just interesting I thought.

I follow through with the recommended W530 guru. As they say in Italiano, mille grazia.

Italians would actually say: mille grazie, but I'm picky here...
Or as we Irish would say: míle buíochas.

As to Boz: are you related to Ötzi from Bozen(Bolsano) by any chance?

W530/W540/W541 can still run jog circles around machines that came out 5 years after them!

Well, you're correct on the spelling (the problem with learning to speak a bit using Pimsleur recordings). But they use both forms: grazie mille and mille grazie. At least I've heard both forms in Venice and Rome.

No relation to the gentlefolk you mentioned. More German and English. I did have an ancestor hung at Tynsdale for rebellion against the crown...

Ok, just publicizing the fact that the 1vyrain approach worked great. Two W530s, up and running now with dual band AC7260 wifi. Woohoo!

Also jailbroke the T510 we have. That worked great, too. See link above, kindly provided by a resident* expert.

Thanks to all for your help.
