CPU stall on T500 - causes?
CPU stall on T500 - causes?
Started experiencing this recently - symptom is that the whole system locks up for a few seconds (intermittently responsive during that time) then returns to normal operation.
Distinctive symptom is that input is lost - i.e. if I am typing when it stalls, the keystrokes are completely lost; this seems different from software-type stalls when the input eventually catches up.
Have installed some new software recently but doubt any of that is the cause - certainly incidents are not software specific, and Resource Monitor does not show anything repeatedly hogging CPU.
Can be tracked on Resource Monitor - stalls coincide with CPU frequency dropping to 0 (usually at 98+%).
First suspect is heat; fan is not obviously running. Is there a heat monitor recommended for Thinkpads? Used to use CPUZ HWMonitor, not installed here, will give it a go. Also will close down system cleanly and run Lenovo diagnostics. Any other suggestions in the meantime please?

Hmm... HWMonitor says max CPU temp (core # 1) 67C - pretty sure that is within spec - and had 1 seizure already.
Is it significant that Core # 0 temps are much lower - e.g. max 58C?

I had an IBM PII machine years ago that did that. It used to drive me nuts.
I ended up removing the software I had installed, though I don't remember what that was so many years ago.
It was like the processor was so busy it ignored the keyboard until it could finish whatever it was doing.
Looking back, I think it was a background process associated with the installed software.

If some of your software bugs out drivers such as chipset and power management drivers, this can happen.
Try also to put your power mode to high performance, and then see if the fan spins loud when your freezing happens.
Clean the heatsink and redo the thermal paste anyways though. Had this issue on a Lenovo Erazer laptop and that turned out to be broken GPU mounting thus one side of the GPU die doesn't get cooling but the thermal diode doesn't see that. Learnt that the hard way when graphical corruption began.

Re: CPU stall on T500 - causes?
Not sure this is [SOLVED] but it has stopped.
The only significant change I made to "fix" it was deleting crap from the SSD, which had been showing capacity bar in red in File Explorer (below about 20% free space on the C: partition, I think).
After a re-boot, no more stalls.
While reading around, I discovered the concept of over-provisioning for SSD, so no, I hadn't set that up properly - may be related.
Hope this proves useful, somewhere, someday, somewho.

Okay that can be extremely harmful to the lifespan of your SSD. Go download Crystaldiskinfo and have a look at the health evaluations of your SSD. I am afraid your SSD is already having retired cells and is on its way out.

Go to Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and delete whatever is IN there (NOT the directory itself).
Everything that W7 downloads (either in the background or via updates) gets stored and stays there.
You could have a shedload of useless files.
I have seen laptops with 15-20GB junk in there!
Check that every once in a while.

Thanks - looks like this. GUI says " Health Status : Good (84 %)", so I'm assuming SSD is... good.

Re: CPU stall on T500 - causes?
Thanks. Only 54MB there; can do other housekeeping as well - recycle bin, web Downloads, redundant backups (until I need them)...RealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 12:11 amGo to Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and delete whatever is IN there (NOT the directory itself).
Everything that W7 downloads (either in the background or via updates) gets stored and stays there.
You could have a shedload of useless files.
I have seen laptops with 15-20GB junk in there!
Check that every once in a while.

That means you have already deteriated the health of the SSD with that harmful use. The SSD wont be the issue yet if you dont stuff it that full ever again, but it is sort of on it's way out as even my 9 year old Intel SSD still has a health of 100% (Its so old that it doesnt even have SATA3)
