Experience with Intel AX-200 WiFi?

#1 Post by wsalomon » Tue Aug 18, 2020 10:11 am

Does anyone have experience in try to put an Intel AX-200 WiFi card into one of these?

I've tried doing this in a T-420 and mechanically, with an adapter an M.2 to mini PCIe adapter, the only place it fits is the WWAN slot that is full-height mini PCIe. (Not enough space in the half-height mini-PCIe WiFi slot which works fine with an AC-7260.)

I've done this with Oleh's hacked BIOS (2nd to the last version), and made sure that in the BIOS that all the I/O devices were enabled. However, despite the white-list having been removed, the card never showed up in Device Manager.

Perhaps the problem might be solved with Serge08's BIOS, but haven't tried it yet as the motherboard is being replaced after being on its last legs for a year (would never shut down, despite a BIOS reflash and a reload of Win 10 2004.

Any thoughts?

No double posting!
If you want general info for such an item, put it in the proper Thinkpad - General HARDWARE/SOFTWARE questions forum, please.

To answer my own question.

I found a repackaged AX-200 module that was mounted on a half-height mini-PCIe card from China on aliexpress.com. it was about $25. Just know that aliexpress "standard shipping" can takes "forever" (1 month) - most of those delays were waiting for the air carrier to precess it, and to get from Chicago after clearing Customs to the East Coast (10 days) There seem to be several shops that do that, the one I got was Toulineua. The 2 connectors mate with the stock antenna wires, so no adapters needed.

When installed, it self-identifies in Device Manager as an "Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX200 160 MHz" device. It works just fine.

It works just fine.

Just for the record, your earlier problem getting an adapted M.2 card to work in the WWAN slot was because that slot doesn't actually have a PCIe connection on the T420. The full-size slot is wired for USB and SATA only while the half-size slot is PCIe only (no USB).
