List of T500 compatible CPU's?
Hello,
I've worked with computers for nearly two decades now but this is my first crack at mucking around with the physical internals.
That said, I've noticed that my T500 has, ever since i replaced the stock windows image with Ubuntu, regularly overheated during normal usage (yesterday it shut down due to over heating while sitting idle). So, I opened up the chassis and pulled out the fan/cooling system to see if it was damaged somewhere. I do see a lot of (blue-ish) corrosion on top of the rear vent at the end of the middle tube. Though, otherwise, i don't see any damage. It could just be that I spilled something on it at some point.
Anyway, I was looking to replace (and possibly upgrade) the fan when I started thinking maybe I could also upgrade my CPU.
So, that brings up the question of this post. I read through a lot of the posts around the T500 and CPU compatibility but honestly I'm more confused than I was before. My main goal in upgrading the CPU would be to reduce the heat output but it would also be great if I could get a performance boost as well.
My machine came with "42X6338 SBB INT.CORE2DUOPROCT9400".
I would GREATLY appreciate if someone could outline the various CPU's and their relative speed.

The T500 manual from the HMM-link at the top of this page has them all.
To avoid (over)heating up, clean and refresh the thermal paste on your CPU, before you waste money on a 'new' CPU.

Ah! Got it! I will definitely try the thermal paster first.

By the way, is there any way to add another heat sync to the stock fan and tubes in my 500? I would like to pull more heat off the chips if possible.

If you now have the integrated GPU fan, you can put on the discrete version (see HMM).
If already discrete, no.

Re: List of T500 compatible CPU's?
The HMM doesn't list every possible CPU option. It only lists the CPUs you could order the machine with. There are some other Penryn CPUs that can be used, but they may have drawbacks. The e8x35 CPUs can be found a bit cheaper that some the the higher T9x00 CPUs. The X9100 can also be used and overclocked, but you need to be careful with temps and it risks overheating the MOSFETs.
Also, if you intend on installing the discrete GPU heatsink on a non-discrete GPU motherboard, you'll need to desolder and remove the modem jack from the motherboard to get it to fit.

Hi guys,
I'm trying to make a searchable HW compatibility list across models here viewtopic.php?f=18&t=133243&p=862042#p862042
Is it ok with you if I use the info you have given in this post?
If you have more you could contribute it would be great:)
With kind regards
Jan
