t400 lcd mod/upgrade possible?
t400 lcd mod/upgrade possible?
just wondering here, has anyone managed to get a 1680x1050 or 1920x1200 lcd to work in the T400? I couldn't find anything on it from a search. my only thought on why it couldn't work would be if the lcd cable did not support it. or were there no 14 inch panels made with that resolution that were lvds?

They don't exist in LVDS.
edp 8:5s exist including 1920x1200, 2560x1600, and 3840x2400. I think dual channel LVDS can be converted up to 2560x1600 @60hz.
The Chinese adapters intended for t430/20/s are no use here, they haven't been reverse-engineered and the sellers are not interested in reprogramming to support other resolutions than presently offered (FHD and QHD), I've asked. I don't have the hacking-skills to attempt it myself or I'd try.
Gotta go for newer hardware if a better screen is desired.
T430/s and 25th Anniversary are the best with 7 row support.

Re: t400 lcd mod/upgrade possible?
i honestly have no real reason to get a t400. i just feel like it would be fun to mess with one, for the sake of messing with one. weird mesh they are, half t61, half t400 series.
are there any IPS screens that would drop-in at the original resolutions? i would assume not...
one thing i did find was a quad-core mod that requires soldering. could be a fun project.
will probably only bother if i run into one for extremely cheap or free. ive got my 1080p ips modded t430 for the nice-screen purposes already
i wonder if there's a generic converter board out there that would work.
i'd be more interested in one that can get 1080p in a latitude e6420 though. i think those are pretty neat t420/430 alternatives, but they've got the same terrible 14" screens. i always wondered why all the laptops that weren't huge workstations suddenly stopped having high-quality screens around that time. i guess they just didn't make them.
I did always wonder why they could do 1600x1200 UXGA in 2001, and IPS only a couple years later, but then couldn't get 1920x1200 in 2012 on a 14 inch laptop...

Since 16:10 screens are making a comeback, maybe there's hope.
OTOH the T400's LVDS is only good up to 1440x900, so it needs a different connection. The docking connector doesn't have Displayport, only DVI-D, so it still needs a DVI to eDP converter board.

Re: t400 lcd mod/upgrade possible?
The best OEM screens of the t400 era would be found in the T500, all models are provisioned for WSXGA and WUXGA and these panels are actually really high quality.
You can still trick out a T400 without resorting to LCD hacks. It has two full-height and one half-height mpcie slot, expresscard, cardbus, SATA ultrabay. Add in the 2503 dock and you gain parallel and RS232, a secondary IDE ultrabay, and a full-size PCIE slot of limited use.

the t500 may be the one to get then. i just do like the 14" form factor though.
