upgrading RAM on my T400

#1 Post by elthinkpado » Tue May 10, 2011 3:09 am

Currently I have a 2GB stick only of PC3-8500
Would I be able to buy a 4GB stick of PC3-10666 and have a total of 6GB?
or would the different speed/size be an issue?

Thanks

Are you runing 64 bit or 32 bits, if you have 32 bits don't wast your money with more memory, it will not recognoized.

So, 1 or 2, 4GB 1333 SODIMMs for, under $35 apiece - I dunno if we are supposed to / allowed to quote prices, but seemingly pretty cheap. PC8500 seems to go for more according to dealram.com and to this dealnews special:
8GB (2x4GB) PC3-8500 DDR3 SO-DIMM RAM Kit for $94 + free shipping
Other World Computing offers the OWC 8GB PC3-8500 DDR3-1066 SO-DIMM 204-Pin Dual Channel Notebook Memory Kit with two 4GB SO-DIMMs, model no. OWC8566DDR3S8GP, for $101.99 plus $1.95 for shipping.... (more)

I expect to want at least 4GB RAM, 6 or 8 acceptable as well for future-proofing, virtualization, etc. They are evidently CL9. Frankly these specs were apparently not envisioned in the original Lenovo specs but Lenovo has a DIMM along these lines:

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/memory/p-55y3711.shtml
p/n 55Y3711

They rate it for the $10 and up, but their own info is bad - they say it is 200 pin which it is obviously not - so I ask for confirm from the experts here.

I guess the question/s is/are:

Are the above RAMs, PC3 1333MHz CL9 or 8, at this price, a reasonable alternative to hunting what now seems to be at least $10 more per DIMM for 4GB PC8500 at CL7?

Will one of these mix well or acceptably well with the 2GB that it came with? If not should I hunt a matching 2gb dimm to pair them, have the 2+4, just the 4, or 2x4? Let's say I would just as soon not do the upgrade again without a good reason - such as thinking that the ideal RAM will be half the price (and available) in a year. I usually prefer to future-proof and would think it silly to buy twice. I can also defray costs, I suppose, by selling off the spare 2gb Lenovo spec RAM.

Maybe this doesn't add to forum knowledge but having searched here, it does seem this is a new price low and I post because perhaps we are past the point where the older/slower is the best market choice - maybe it's now obsolete and will be rarer and costlier? I've seen that with older stuff like feeding my T4x.

No 100% sure on the accuracy of this but....
It would be very wise to always upgrade dual channel ram in pairs, ie take out the existing 2GB of ram and dispose of it however (ebay?).

I would upgrade with two 4GB sticks of ram for a bump to 8GB. It does not matter if you get DDR3-1066 ram or DDR3-1333 ram, they will both run at DDR3-1066 specs in the laptop. Sticking with others advice, get whatever is cheaper and available for you.

I've just bought a pair of the exact same ram couple weeks ago for really great price. Tested it on my T400 for couple days before putting them in my newly bought x200s. Runs perfectly on both machine without any problems.

Fyi, I believe the original thinkpad spec is a CL7 @ 1066MHz (Kingston is CL9 @ 1333 ), nevertheless worked for both TP. Using matching pair probably helps.

Hope this helps.

Hey man, it is always best to start a new thread to ask your question. This thread that you replied to is 2 and half years old and is related to RAM prices, not RAM problems.
