thinkpad l412 crashes when I download files or move files

I have tried to download xubuntu, to run in virtual box, on my new Thinkpad L412 runing win 7 but it crashes during download with an usb modem. It also crashes when i tries to move things from an external drive to the laptop. I have had a couple of blue screens that mentions bios upgrade. It seems like the problem is moving large amounts of data cause i have downloaded smaller programs without windows 7 crashing. I am not a big fan of windows but i need win 7 for photo editing. How can i solve this problem? Thanks in advance!
