Do any of the W series have an eSata socket ?

But eSATA is available in the docking station for the W700 fyi, using mine now for backing up the Vista 64 preload prior to first boot.

Also - I have used an esata express card in my W500 and the performance is pretty good.

I would agree, eSATA via Belkin ExpressCard 54mm that I have certainly outperforms USB. I didn't like the wiggle that T61p allowed with 34mm cards, so went wide.

Now with W700, which both handle 54 or 34mm widths simultaneously (side by side, instead of above one another), you could go also with with 34mm wide expresscard designs too, many available for under $50:
