Dual monitors for W700 with dock

#1 Post by Brutal82 » Mon Mar 09, 2009 1:12 pm

I am considering the w700 for my next laptop since I am into CAD design as well as graphic art. Presently I am working on dual monitors at work and wish to continue doing so once I get the w700. I know it has been mention that the W700 can run dual monitors with the mini dock. I am wondering if that is true and how that would work with a mini dock. I am considering running two 24" LCDs as my desk set up. Is this possible with the w700?

Best way to do it is one on DVI and one on DisplayPort. You can use VGA - but for 24" the quality may suffer.

Would it notably suffer?

I don't know. On the T42's it was awful. My X61s is better. You need to ask someone who has the W700 with the same graphics card you plan to get (2500 or 3500)

I was looking into the NVIDIA FX3700 Graphic chip.

Be careful trying to run DVI and Display port at the same time, Lenovo says that you can't run DVI and Display port at the same time. But I have not tried. I run two monitors all the time, one VGA and one DVI, note during setup with my W700 VGA is always monitor 1 and DVI monitor 2

Hope this helps

PS when I get to it I will try to run Display port and DVI at the same time, but no time soon as I am happy with my current setup

If I do set up dual monitors I was planing of using DVI and VGA ports to do it. If I am correct the dock and laptop has both DVI and VGA port in the back of them. Is that correct?

I use dual monitors using the dvi and display port with no problems. In addition you can use any 2 of the 3 ports and that seems to be supported by presentation director.

Presentation director is a lenovo utility to configure your monitors, which should be installed already. It allows you to setup different profiles, so you can quickly switch your monitor configurations, like for home vs work, or using projector.
link Presentation Director is a display configuration utility for your ThinkPad computer that enables you to create, manage, and use presentation and display schemes. You can access these schemes through an on-screen display menu that is shown when you press the Fn + F7 key combination on your keyboard (Fn+F7 on-screen function)
