W500 .. Color Calibration with External Monitor

#1 Post by FrankK-F » Thu Apr 02, 2009 10:50 pm

I thought I understood this but now am somewaht confused.

Have been exploring my new W500 .. have a DELL 3008WFP monitor connected to the Display Port (this connector should also be present on the Advanced Dock ... and speaking of this Dock, the Ultrabay should be compatible with the SATA Ultrabay devices of the W500 ... but are NOT; not a smart move by Lenovo).

(On my A31p and external monitor running from the internal video card could be selected as either 'primary' or 'secondary' ... and color calibration applied only to the 'primary' display. That is you calibrated the designated 'primary' display and then calibrated that monitor ... e.g., for color work. In more recent times I got a dock-compatible video card (FireMV-2260) with two DisplayPort connectors (2 x 2560x1600 external monitors); I was able to install afterwards an Autodesk compatible 'Catalyst' driver for my internal monitor .. and calibrate each monitor individually. One final note here .. while this setup is capable of running stably .. someone with my fidgety user habits can easily cause that system to get corrupted .. leading to a OpSys reinstall.)

On the W500, I can't seem to find a similar designation option between the monitors... "1" and "2", internal and external, respectively. Yet in Display Properties if I highlight either monitor .. then in color management I can select different ICI profiles for each. Does this mean that each monitor can be in a calibrated state at the same time ... or is this a mere misunderstanding.

This is a non-trivial question for me as I have acquired this upscale monitor for its superior color gamut and dynamic range ... along with its 2560x1600 size for my photo and video editing.

Could someone illuminate this topic to clarify?
