Thinkpad W510 Options Recommendations!

#1 Post by Shane Stump » Wed Feb 03, 2010 7:01 am

I have ordered a W510 with a 920XM to be my portable "workstation" to complement my desktop (Thinkpad W700ds)!

Any how, I want to maximize the memory out to 16gb and add a large SSD.

What 1x4 memory modules are others using?

What about SSDs?

Please provide links with your recommendations!

Best Regards,

Shane

12GB is optimal, not 16gb. These processors have triple channel memory controllers, so 3 DIMMS will provide full memory bandwidth. Populating 4 DIMMS drops you down to two channels...with a 33% performance hit

1. So are triple-channel confirmed?
Someone else on this Forum speculated that it may not be triple channel...

2. Assuming that it IS a triple-channel, so what is the best 12-GB RAM layout for 4 memory slots, since there are no 3 GB RAM?

~3 slots occupied by 4 FB RAM each?

I am still waiting for my W510 to arrive and just ordered it with base memory sticks to update to the fastest 9GB I can.

Which sticks should I order? Brand and make? Price isn't that much of a problem.. I just want the fastest I can get. thanks.

It's dual-channel, of course. http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=43 ... odes=SLBLW

Only the LGA1366 (=desktop i7 9xx and some Xeons) processors are triple-channel.

<Insert rant about people who don't bother to check their facts here>.

The Core i7 for desktop has triple channel memory controller. The Core i7 for Mobile has dual channel.
Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

Only the LGA-1366 desktop i7s are triple-channel. This is the i7 900-series -- 920, 940, 960, 975, etc. The newer LGA-1156 desktop i7s are dual-channel -- e.g. i7-860, etc. But they're all quad-cores (so far!). I continue to be surprised at how much misinformation is out there on this topic. Much of the blame likely goes to Intel themselves...

Regarding 4GB DIMMs, I have two of these Samsung DIMMs installed in my W510:

$159.99/ea now. They were about $10 more when I bought mine. No issues so far, but I've had my W510 for only a few days.
