Processor & Spec Line Up For A31

#1 Post by Virtual_Law » Thu Jan 23, 2025 5:12 am

A long time ago we had an A31, but I can't remember the exact specs we had it with. I was wondering if anyone could provide the list of specifications these were shipped with, or under. I've even seen a listing on ebay where they state it's an AMD processor. Ours ran Windows XP 32-bit. We had some Intel processor, but I don't know which one. I'm trying to buy the same computer, and test some factory reset software. It looked like it could run Windows Vista, but I think attempting to install from the CD ended up in a RAM requirement error. Ours was close to 500MB.

No IBM laptop at the time used AMD processors. None.

Vista and above are painfully slow on A31 due to an outdated graphics chip. W2K and XP are the realm of these machines.

Have fun.

These two resources should cover everything you need. :D
Hey, I scrolled down to the A31 series, and saw the hard drive section/bit, but I didn't see anything indicating whether it was IDE, or SATA.
Any ideas?

The reason you didn't see if it was IDE or SATA is because SATA did not even exist at the time. So it was surely IDE. :D

A note on SATA; while ultrabay 2000-compatible sata adapters existed in the past, they’re long gone and unobtainable now. IDE to msata or ngff adapters work alright, in my experience, so you can at least get solid state random access speeds.

I liked Win 7 on my a31 but didn’t want to deal with buying a license, so i went back to XP.

You probably saw ATI graphics chip rather than ADM CPU. Most/all came with it. They tend to fail on these models.

Re specs you can also find them in the maintenance manual:
