A30 fastest CPU...?
A30 fastest CPU...?
Hi
Just restoring an A30 - which has a P3 1133Mhz CPU in it.
I have a similar P3 1800Mhz but it wouldn't boot with that (not even CPU fan).
Anyone know what is the fastest CPU which can go in with just a most recent BIOS?
Thanks!

Re: A30 fastest CPU...?
Seems 1.7Ghz is fastest 479 which will go in here.
Anyone know if this will work?
CPU Intel Pentium PM 725 1.6G 2M 400 479 SL7EG

Nope, that's for T4x series.
Fastest for A30p is the same as in the T23: P III Tualatin 1.2GHz

Ah ok 1133 is fast enough then to bother seeking an alternative. Job done. cheers

Re: A30 fastest CPU...?
Technically the fastest CPU it can take is the 1.33Ghz variant, but both 1.26Ghz and 1.33Ghz chips are OEM only parts and hence exceptionally rare, so yeah the fastest CPU you can buy today would be exactly that 1.2Ghz chip.RealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Mon Jun 06, 2022 8:09 amNope, that's for T4x series.

Similarly for A31/A31p, the fastest mass produced chip is the 2.4Ghz chip, while the absolute fastest chips would be 2.5 and 2.6Ghz P4-M chips, but those are also exceptionally rare, though I have a 2.5Ghz chip and it did work with an A31p just fine (although thermals were terrible)
You must've tried a Pentium 4-M, which uses a similarly enough socket but obviously the pinouts and even the architecture are just totally different.
(Even if it did work, a P4-M 1.8Ghz is not a single bit faster than a 1.13Ghz PIII-M thanks to Netburst anyway)
But is it worth it to go from 1.13 to 1.2? Definitely not.
If you are gonna do that upgrade anyway, you might as well use that opportunity and retrofit some copper shims on top of the GPU chip to make contact with the heatsink. That can go a long way in keeping the GPU chip much cooler.

Re: A30 fastest CPU...?
Would anyone know the sSpecs for these CPUs?
I don't think I have a PIII-M machine, so I'm not sure how the CPUs even look like.
Does a 1.2Ghz look like this?
Also looking at a few online chip wiki sites, it seems they'll have socket 479 CPUs instead of the 478.
Not sure if this information is correct, Intel's website doesn't list sSpec, just basic info.
I'm guessing the only way to source a Tualatin 1.26, or 1.33 is from finding a heavy duty workstation, like a Dell Inspiron, Latitude or Precision.

I'm a bit suspicious of that photo because of the ©'02 and QS (quality sample) markings on the processor.
Photos from CPU World https://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium- ... 20GD).html show ©'01 on production units.

Re: A30 fastest CPU...?
I know for Pentium 4-M you can find the rare 2.5 and 2.6 versions in something like a Dell Inspiron 8500, kind of a "gaming laptop" back then for the higher specced ones and they are not worth much money (since it's the first widescreen laptops).
For Pentium III-M, while you can find them on Inspiron 8100 high end configs (again kinda meant as gaming laptop between that and the then next-gen GeForce2 Go) or Precision M40, those things cost as much as an A30p nowadays... Or at the very least, as much money as a working 15" A2x series. Besides, those motherboards are in fact far more reliable than the A30/p motherboards (I think I worked on 4-5 I8100/8200/C810/C840's, none had motherboard issues)...
