R50E CPU upgrade - what is possible?

#1 Post by cliddell » Thu Feb 25, 2010 4:21 pm

Greetings all

I have been offered an R50E with 1.3 gHZ Celeron processor. Not being a great fan of the Celeron, and enjoying dabbling with hardware, I was wondering what is the fastest CPU this machine would be capable of taking? It's a Model No 1834-2LG.

TIA for your thoughts.
G40 - P4 2.4 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, 40 GB HDD
G40 currently 2.66 GHz Celeron in throes oof upgrading.

Fastest/most expensive would be Pentium M 765 (Intel SL7V3) 2.1GHz
Sweet spots are M 735(SL7EP) 1.7GHz, and M 745 (SL8U6) 1.8GHz
(Look for Dothans with 400MHz FSB.)

Edit: advised the wrong FSB type, sorry.

RBS, the 1.3Ghz Celeron used on an R50e has a 400Mhz FSB. I'd recommend a 1.8Ghz Pentium M 745 Dothan.
From the TRWBOOK -

Mainstream performance and features; two-spindle system
Intel® Celeron M Processor 1.3GHz with 400MHz system bus or
Intel Pentium M Processor 705 (1.5GHz with 1MB L2 cache) or 715 (1.5GHz with
2MB L2 cache) with enhanced Intel SpeedStep™ technology1 and 400MHz system bus
Celeron M: 512KB; Pentium M 705: 1MB; Pentium M 715: 2 MB; All: ECC
128MB or 256MB std / 2GB max7 / PC2700 333MHz DDR 1 (memory controller limits
speed to 266MHz) / non-parity / CL2.5 /
two 200-pin SO-DIMM sockets / std memory in one socket / one socket available
