Keeping my D Partiton when installing Win 7

Good afternoon group:

I just got my copy of Windows 7 Pro and would like to begin the custom upgrade installation.

I currently have a D partition which houses various goodies and I'd like to know if this partition will be trashed by Windows 7 during the upgrade / install process.

Will I have the option of keeping this partition?

You are more than likely going to lose your D:\ partition. Best to save this to an external hard diska dn before installing Windows 7 disconnect the external hard disk. (I had this problem, lost my D:\ partition)

I am using Acronis and Acronis will not restore a Windows 7 partition. It will restore a whole hard disk that has Windows 7 on it.

Similarly Paragon Disk Manager will trash the whole hard disk when you try to delete a partition on which Windows 7 is installed.

Sofar I am using Acronis and am backing up the whole hard disk up to an external hard disk. Have restored several times and this has proven to be reliable.

I'd say probably not. I also have a D partition (as well as a J and V) and I have yet to lose those partitions when installing a new OS. I do a clean install as opposed to an upgrade, but I don't see how it would be that different.

You know, I just reread my reply. What I meant to say is that I think you'll be fine and that you won't lose your D partition. Too much allergy medicine.

Last week I installed Windows 7 into the partition that Windows XP used to occupy and I haven't lost any of my other partitions.

You just need to make sure to select the correct partition to install Windows 7 into.

I agree with moronoxyd. Windows 7 setup program will recognize all existing FAT32 and NTFS partitions along with the unallocated space. So, if you carefully pick the right partition (or unallocated space) to install Windows 7 on it, it will preserve all other partitions. Windows may only change the drive letter of your other partitions. However, this is not really crucial since you can always change back the drive letters by using the built-in disk management utility.
